10/18/2003: Hippo mom and baby

Happy Saturday! This great shot is a mom hippo protecting its newborn, in Beijing. Put it under the category of those things so ugly that they're cute?

First thing that came to mind:

"Eat your fucking peas, or I'll bite your head off!"

Very cute pic UT. Luckily hippos are herbivores, it almost looks like mama is hungry for baby hippo;) .

It always amazes me how something so small can grow into something so big, especially in only a few years...

AlwaysAmazed 10-18-2003 03:39 PM

it may only take a few years, but it takes a sh@#load of food... and as others have pointed out, hippos are vegetarian. so it takes EVEN MORE food... jeez, imagine how much manure that is...

;)

lovely thoughts for your saturday morning! <takes a bow>

They're herbivores but they still kill more people than any other critter in Africa. Probably because so many people travel by water in flimsy canoes.

I think hippo mamas are *very* protective of ther babies (as the IotD shows), like mama bears with their cubs. I've heard that hippos are quite dangerous, like Rhinos, and don't like being messed around with by peeps. I read that their lips are 2 feet wide . Just the right size to chomp down on a human torso;), and they lurk underwater with just their eyes above the waterline, like crocks, so when the peeps go by in their flimsy canoes.......CHOMP!!!

Ohh, wait, I'm thinking about the African freshwater shark (looks similar to a dolphin AND a hippo)....NEVERMIND. :p

Last statement has proven to be sarcasm by snopes.com. Previous statement, as of yet, appears to be valid.

Just finished watching Nature on PBS. Tonights show was called "Hippo Beach". The "Beachmaster" (alpha male) climbed out of the water in the middle of the night, chased off two lionesses and munched a dead buffalo they were eating.
The narrator said it was rare but hippos do eat meat occasionally. Especially the alpha males that are busy defending their pods (ho's) and procreating so they don't have time to eat properly.
Guess it's like the health food freak going to McD's in a pinch.:D
