I think it's to protect her from evil spirits or something. When she grows up, she can divorce the dog (if it's still alive), and marry a real man.:rolleyes:

I had of course heard that it was difficult to marry off one's female offspring because of the dowry requirments, leading to an eruption of storefront ultrasound and abortion clinics to get rid of female fetuses, but this is a new one on me ...
