7/5/2003: Record-setting sandal

This is a nice one for a hot, lazy, long holiday type of day.

On 4/10/2002, IotD had an Indian gent who built the world's largest shoes in response to 9/11. On 10/23/2002 this was eclipsed by a pair built in the Philippines.

Now we have this, the world's largest sandal, certified so by the Guinness people. It's 12.9 feet (3.93 meters) long and 4.8 feet (1.46 meters) wide, and it was built in Lahore, Pakistan.

It's good to see that the Pakis responded with a sandal, so as to avoid the shoe escalation that could occur if India responded back. I only hope the Guinness folks haven't put all of these into the same category of "footwear" which could touch off further problems of international relations.

There was other record-related news this week, as someone found a 6.5 inch (16.5 cm) french fry, and put it up on eBay. This was followed by finds of other, much longer french fries. It turns out this is all due to genetic engineering. New larger and longer potatoes have been engineered -- requested by the folks at McDonald's, by the way. These potatoes are now everywhere, widely in use. (They also contain numerous other genetically-engineered changes but perhaps we should leave that thread to another area.) This detail has not been reported by the media I've seen, so I pass it along here.

I guess when your workforce is paid only 40 cents an hour or so, there's no limit on the size of footwear you can manufacture.

Are you sure it's not a secret prototype of a new line? They could be developing these for the offspring of the people eating the genetically altered foods.
Shoe escalation? Of course. Everybody knows you must wear shoes on the escalator. :D

Maybe they were made for Ian Thorpe!
