May 3rd, 2019: Slovenian Sculptures
These pictures were taken after a nine day, high wind, snow & ice storm on Mt Javornic in Slovenia.
http://cellar.org/img/slovenia1.jpg The photographer says this rime ice was created by a dense fog on the top of the mountain during the storm. But I don’t see how you can have fog on top of the mountain in a high wind, more likely it was a low cloud. http://cellar.org/img/slovenia2.jpg On the most exposed parts of the mountain the ice was 40 inches thick. That's hard to believe, even 40 cm is crazy, 40mm is believable, maybe CNN screwed up. On most evergreens the load get carried by a lot of branches, but deciduous trees a single branch can load to failure. http://cellar.org/img/slovenia3.jpg Since it appears storms everywhere are getting more intense, Mt Javornic will probably get slapped again. link |
Rime ice is really pretty stuff. It's super thick in these pictures. Some of that ice looks 40 inches thick in spots.

Made me cold just looking at it.
