Dodge Viper and Mitsubishi Evolution

Why would these vehicles be referred to as the 1,500 "strong" Dodge Viper and the 1,400 "strong" Mitsubishi Evolution. What is being measured here - cc? horsepower?
Enquiring translators need to know ....

Some googling says there is a claimed 1500 hp Dodge Viper out there, which is obviously not stock, as the "regular" one does 640 hp.

The "regular" Mitsu Evo does like 237 hp... nobody is claiming one with 1400... someone is claiming one with 2000 hp...

So if what you are translating is suggesting not stock models, but heavily modified cars that only exist for the purpose of making cool videos and killing rich people, this could be what they are talking about.

I suspect they aren't measuring anything, just advertising hyperbole.

180 Hp per liter? That is impressive? Indy racers easily do that. Funny cars make those numbers look pathetic. Even a road car - Honda S2000 - does 120 Hp/liter without exotic fuels.

That car is an accomplishment for its builder. But is nothing special to all. It was another of many attempts at pushing out the envelope. But only does what others have already done.

Take off fenders and body off so that we can see what only matters. That painted metal only hides what is relevant.

Try driving that Indy racer on the street.

I wanna see the cop car that could catch it to give the driver a ticket!

You can't outrun the radio. http://cellar.org/2012/nono.gif

The Dubai Police decided that what they already had in stock just wasn’t enough, so they decided to go and get themselves the second-fastest car in the world, the Bugatti Veyron. While the Dubai police could overtake almost everything on the road, they apparently need a car that take down anything. Capable of speeds up to 268 miles per hour and hitting 60 miles per hour from zero in just 2.5 seconds, there’s no way anything can get out of the Veyron’s grasp – unless a Hennessey Venom GT shows up. It set the police department back a cool $1.6 million, but hey, it’s Dubai!

A helicopter and radios are faster.

I thought it might refer to the quantity of cars produced, but a quick Google search shows around 30,000 Vipers produced, so it's not that.

Anybody can put an Indy engine in a car that can be driven on the street. He tried to create an Indy engine. Only created something that is less.

Ten cylinders cannot even do what is accomplished by four on the Indy track. More cylinders. His penis must be bigger. Impressive was that he attempted it. Unimpressive was the result.

Then they covered up best parts of that car with metal skin and paint.

Radios, yeah, ok. But, helicopters? Only just. The Eurocopter X3* is the world's fastest chopper at 293mph. The second fastest? The Chinook. It'd get left behind pretty quick at 196mph, though, if it weren't for curves.

According to this anyway.

*The X3 is a compound helicopter, and has forward facing props to help with thrust.
