Suicide

The debate over whether suicide should be legal or not I'm afraid will continue to make people suffer for sometime to come. But this clipping from long ago made me do a double take. It sounds crazy to me but I guess in 1911, seventy was pretty old. Would they have changed plans if they won the lottery after 9 years and 364 days, or do socialists have a death wish.

OK, should this sort of thing be legalized also? How about destitute and won't buy lottery tickets? Maybe serving a life sentence? Or should potential suicide cases be justified by medical conditions?

The thing that I want to know is, did the wife really want to do this, or was she just following her husbands instructions, which would have been the usual way things happened in those times.

They made this decision in 1901, to end it in 1911. Do you think she had much say in the matter?

That's what I mean. I doubt she had any say at all. That means it was more like murder suicide really.

He decided he wanted to take it with him. Of course in those days she wouldn't have much fun being destitute.

It was very thoughtful of him to ensure his wife went along so she wouldn't become a burden on society. You don't see that kind of civic mindedness much anymore.

Probably to serve him in the next life. Must have been reading about Egypt.

Women don't have enough sense to make these complicated decisions for themselves. The husband handled it for her.

I guess he figgered he'd need a sammich.
