A Mac For The PC at Heart.
Wired is running an article about a guy named John Frazier in Minnesota. Who by using off the shelf items is intending on Manufacturing what he calls an IBox. Would any of you guys buy one?

Roll your own Macintosh.
I traded a PC built for my friend's mother for a G3-266. You can probably pick them up for cheap at this point, and just upgrade them using an upgrade processor and commodity HDs, DVDs, memory, and expansion cards. Feel the OSX/Jaguar love. The heart of this system is an actual Apple Gigahertz board that's ususally distributed to repair shops, so it might look like this is all perfectly legal. I don't know if Apple is going to put up with this for long. They might try and point out that Jaguar can only run on Apple branded hardware. But you can also run Yellow Dog Linux on PPC hardware, and to make it even more interesting, you can run Mac on Linux running OSX inside YDL. Then they'll drag out the DMCA and try to twist it to fit. I hope not. |
I think calling it the Ibox was his most stupid move. He won't be successful and if he is Apple is going to hand him his ass on a plate so fast it's not funny.

I agree with jag, calling it "iBox" guarantees that Apple Legal will pay quite a lot of attention to it.

Yeh, I was thinking of making a joke about it too, but I've spent an awful lot of time doing that lately, so I gave it a pass. :)
