Jessica Jones

Just watched the pilot. Verrrrrry impressed. I never read the comics, so I'm coming to this totally fresh. If the rest lives up to the pilot I'll be a very happy bunny.

I love the lead character. I think she might, on the basis of a single episode alone be my favourite ever female super hero. I like that she is flawed in interesting ways. You don't often get that kind of character in a female lead. She's sexual without being sexualised, which is so refreshing to see in superhero tv. Her gender is not her primary characteristic. Though the danger she faces from the main antagonist is one that plays with a fear many women can particularly relate to. It's the kind of threat we don't usually view from the female perspective when it crops up on tv. We usually get a kind of pseudo female perspective, in which the action is following the female character, but through the lens of an assumed male viewer - it's subtly (and sometimes not so subtly) different.

The main antagonist, who we've only seen in glimpses as yet, played by David Tennant, seems a genuinely terrifying threat. Very unsettling idea. Looking forward to how that plays out. It's a nicely compelling story, with already some intriguing characters. For a pilot, I'm pretty impressed because the first thing I wanted to do when the credits rolled was play the next episode. I just took a break to write this and make a brew, then I'm diving back in.

Anybody watching it?

It's in my queue, but I have no idea who she is or anything. All I know is she's from comic books. I'm not sure I'd "get it", you know?

But, I may have a binge this weekend since it seems like you are in the same boat

Keryx watched it the other nite. I will get her to post her thoughts.

Watched eps. 1 and 2 last night, loved them. Will post more later.

I just watched the second episode. Man, Tenant's Kilgrave is creepy as fuck.

DanaC 11-25-2015 04:08 PM

That was interesting, thanks Zath. I'm hopin they retcon some of that backstory, personally.

Well, I just finished watching episode 9. Holy shitballs Batman, it is really gathering pace.

Spoilers in white:

I was sooo convinced Jerry was going to let him out of that cell. As she was about to turn the second wheel, I paused it. I had to break off and get a cup of tea - muttering about not opening the door ffs. I did not see shooting out the glass coming at all.

Minor niggle: didn't like Kilgrave's mother's English accent. Though to a non-Brit ear it probably sounds very close.

I am completely loving this show. It explores some serious and complex issues through the prism of a superhero show and isn't afraid to hit them head on. The acting is great, and the characters well-drawn.

Also, a really classy opening sequence: (works best in full sreen)

I have such a massive queue of DVRed shows that I can't justify Netflix at this point.

But I really want to watch Daredevil and Jessica Jones.

I am sick to death of the superhero fad. Simon Pegg had a great piece awhile back on the infantilization of American adults, but anyway... The point is, I didn't even like Daredevil or the new Supergirl. But goddamn, Jessica Jones sucked me in with just two episodes. As a person with highly discriminatory taste in this genre, I proclaim it the best by far.

Hey Dana, thanks for the white spoiler text. I value your opinions on this subject second only to the surprise of watching it happen on screen. We'll watch them, for sure, but we're definitely not to ep 9 yet.

The only superhero show I really liked before this was Arrow. I don't like the Flash, got seriously bored with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, and haven't even bothered watching the new Supergirl - it looks tooshiny. Mind you, Superman never really did it for me. Even when I got into Smallville, briefly, it was for Lex Luther rather than Clarke. Suprman was always too clean cut for me.

I like super hero stuff when it's done well. Arrow, for me strikes a nice balance between the humour and fun of a comic book, and the darker edge that tv can gve it. First series Heroes, was a fantastic look at super hero tropes - pity it dissolved into self-indulgent, incoherent nonsense.

The basic tropes of superhero fiction I like - one of the best examples of it for me is actually Person of Interest - superheroes without superpowers and capes.

Jessica Jones is bringing something new. Lots of somethings new. It's a psychological thriller and at times pretty deep and human drama. Stylish as fuck too.

Of course, now I have to give fucking Daredevil a go.

Which is the thing with this inter-franchise stuff. I watched the first crossover episodes of Arrow/Flash and it was pretty clear the Flash wasn't for me. But I'm quite intrigued at how they're building the Defenders with each team member having their own series leading into the group mini-series. That's some pretty bold television-making right there. I am fascinated to see if they pull this off. On the back of JJ I have to say I have rather more optimism about the project than I ever did when i was just hearing about it.What initially sounded to me like the worst case of cashing in and superhero overload is starting to look like something interesting and creatively daring.

Just finished season 1 of Jessica Jones ( are there any more seasons?)
Good show, liked how the grew or withered, having their own story arcs some of which end before the end, so it's not everything tied up in one big finale.

Just got HBO, might start working through Game of Thrones.
