I heard it in a story on NPR today and thought of my parents who met as a result of that war. Dad was in British Intelegence MI-5 and my mother was in Detachment 101 of the OSS, America's precursor to the CIA. They had met in Ceylon and later dated in Chungking, China were dad later proposed to her. She had already left for home when the surrender was announced. Dad said a lot of the officers of the various allied staff in Chunking met and all got drunk.

In memory of that time I post these from my archive of old family pictures.

Wars, or far flung outpost must be romantic, brought your folks together, as well as Julia and Paul Childs. :thumb:

I asked dad (ninety last month) what he remembered of VJ Day.
He served in the Royal Navy on a landing craft carrier and said that there was an almost routine announcement of 'Stand to! Stand to! War is over'.
They were landing troops up the coast from Singapore at the time and just carried on with the task.
The ship didn't get back to the UK until 1946.
