Women of the Air Force

http://cellar.org/2003/womenkc35.jpg

The all-female crew of an Air Force KC-135.

Let's get this out of the way: I'd hit it! - no I wouldn't, because it would probably hit back.

larger version

(These women are not piloting into Iraq; they're refueling flights into Afghanistan.)

I've never been one for raw patriotism, seriously, but this kind of thing really gets to me. These are the faces of modern feminism.

These women are, without a doubt, seriously "empowered" - in every possible way. The one in the lower right, the boom operator, has just finished refueling European F-16s with 63,000 pounds of fuel. You GO girl!!

You rotten sonofabitch! I feel duped!

I see a thread title that says "Women of the Air Force," thinking that it's going to be some Playboy spread. And then I see this...talk about severe disappointment!

SteveDallas 03-19-2003 08:57 PM

If you feel that strongly about it syc, why don't you grab a camera, and head over to the nearest Air Force base, and ask the women there to ditch their uniforms for just a few minutes so you can take some shots of them baring it all for their countrymen. I'm sure we would all cheer you along in your efforts. (And maybe bring along some small cardboard boxes to carry you back home in.)

There is an interesting article in Time this week - a married couple of batallion commanders, both in the 101st screaming eagles. She pilots in a batallion worth of Blackhawks, he flies a group of 24 apaches that cover her in and out, pretty damn cool.

"hey honey, thanks for taking out the SAM site that was about to blow me out of the air"

Steve, you like taking pictures...come with me.

Mid-air refueling does have erotic overtones (viz. Dr. Strangelove).

If they made more women like this instead of those simpering my-nails-aren't-dry whiners the world would be a better place.

Excuse my sexism but I like strong women.

Undertoad 03-19-2003 10:03 PM

Strong and, in the case of the pilots at least, confident, intelligent, experienced... best-of-the-best types.

Not on this assignment... but thanks for the offer!

I kind of don't consider young girls as possible targets - if you know what I mean. My niece is that old. I kind of have an inkling of what the whole fatherhood thing is about now. She's flying Blackhawks for the Airforce, but I'm not sure if she's in the Gulf or not. Time to give my brother a call.

"Kind of like some of my niece's friends though", said the dirty mid-thirites guy...

Gee...you know who that "they" is that makes those women?

Men. Men who are intimidated by strong women.

When somebody first emailed me this pic, I filed it in the same folder with that babelicious Blackhawk gunner.

Female. Wholesome. Competant. Deadly. Aviators.

Doesn't get any better than that...

I'd blame monogamy for that. If you can only have one mate, she has to be everything. But if you can have several, you can afford to have a couple that are strictly decorative.

No, I think it's society as a whole that shapes people. I don't see how you can pin it on men specifically. Women also act as role models and status-quo enforcers. It's a group effort.

Hey, some men in Iraq have multiple wives. We could always settle down there and set ourselves up some harems. After we restructure their government to be a democracy, of course.

xoxoxoBruce 03-22-2003 07:15 AM

In order to have a harem you have to dominate them. Make them toe the mark and maintain discipline. I think that's a price, I'm not willing to pay, for sexual variety. I too, love strong women.
