What exactly is a hipster?

I'm afraid I might be one. How would I know?

If you're able to lie to yourself and others so much that you can convince yourself that kombucha actually tastes good, you are a true hipster. If you are willing to grow the slimy culture in your own home, you have successfully achieved something all hipsters thrive for but few actually realize: complete alienation from all other humans.
Seriously? Isn't this like 15 years or so out of date?

I'm reading through and it all just looks kind of studenty to me.

I also defend kombucha from both the dirty hippy and digestion impaired perspectives. Lil Griff assures me that hipsters are a serious problem for humanity though.

My kids told me that a Hipster is defined as someone who always does contrary things, or chooses anti establishment products. They always have to be 'the first one to X' ... X being ...like that new band, ...wear the new style, use weird slang,...blah de blah.

oh, and they drink Pabst Blue Ribbon for some reason.

Rich studenty. I see no toast or Pot Noodles.
Or for that matter own-brand cornflakes with stolen milk

Hipsters love irony. They prize vinyl and old typewriters. Shaggy hair and beards are also important, because every youth counterculture movement always just happens to choose grooming habits that require the least amount of work.

Aliantha 04-15-2014 04:59 PM

Over here, hipsters are well groomed. See 1D style of dress etc. Most of the other things i would agree with.

glatt 04-15-2014 05:09 PM

I was drinking Milwaukee's Best for a while, but no Pabst, so I think I'm good. Plus, I'm 47, so I think I've aged out of hipster and into eccentric with all my weird shit.

You occasionally shown some latent signs you could become one, glatt, but at present, nah. :headshake

Depends on of which Hipsters you speak. Yes for the bored brats of large urban areas around the world who decided to mimic the bohemians, just as the beatniks had done. Honorable recycling, me thinks.

But then you have a larger group that mimic the original mimics. They think they got in early enough to be part of the movement, because they heard about it from Rolling stone or NYT Magazine, instead of their peers. They don't even know they're mimicking mimics.

Lastly come the fashion/accessory industry looking for something to mimic. Ah, skinny jeans = less denim = more profit. So now there are mainstream young-uns looking like previous hipsters, which causes the prevs to abandon the look for fear of not being taken seriously. Ironically, they don't realize nobody takes them seriously anyway.

So yes, Dana, 15 0r 50 or 70.

No fucking way is PBR hip; it doesn't taste good enough. It's more the anti-hip, in that it demonstrates a fella ain't even got taste in his mouth, which seems a sorry state of affairs.

Sure, it could be worse -- there's always National Bohemian. Its lager -- pretty much tasteless. Its dark -- salty, of all things. :thepain:

Hipsters drink PBR for the ironic value to show that they aren't obsessed with how people perceive them. They also go mental for weird craft brews.

Aliantha 04-22-2014 08:09 AM

Of course vice grips are a hand tool.

People say the PBR interest can be traced to this film:
