Check out dis boid

http://cellar.org/2013/coolbird.jpg

This bird bounced around a tree at the Loveshack. I've never seen one like it before. I ran in to get the digital camera but only had about 10 seconds before it left. This is the only shot.

Unfortunately I did not get a really good look at the beak/head, only that it was red.

I think it may be a woodpecker, but please identify. I will be back in about an hour. I'm counting on your shared wisdom here.

I think it's a red-headed pecker. ;)

Actually a Red-bellied Woodpecker (though I don't see a red belly in any of the pictures I've seen. (We just called this red-headed dude in HS a red-headed pecker, cause he was kind of a pecker head, if you know what I mean.)

Do you hear him a'peckin'?

Quote:

Red-bellied Woodpeckers are pale, medium-sized woodpeckers common in forests of the East. Their strikingly barred backs and gleaming red caps make them an unforgettable sight – just resist the temptation to call them Red-headed Woodpeckers, a somewhat rarer species that's mostly black on the back with big white wing patches. Learn the Red-bellied's rolling call and you’ll notice these birds everywhere.
Quote:

The Red-bellied Woodpecker’s most common call is a shrill, rolling kwirr or churr given by both sexes. You might also hear a gruff, coughing cha cha cha sounding through the woods, usually a contact call between mates, or a throaty growl exchanged when birds are close together.
There are some sound examples here:

I did hear me some peckin but it was a few days ago.

It's been YEARS for me, since I heard any peckin'.

Oh, wait...nevermind.

I'm very confused...after looking at quite a few woodpecker pix, trying to help UT identify his boid, I did not see even one blue woodpecker.

Was my entire childhood a lie?

Sheldonrs 10-30-2013 05:25 PM

I don't think we can use the word "leotard" anymore.
Sarah Palin demands we use "Special Knees".
