Uniter or Divider?
 

Facebook, does it further divide people into sorted categories or does it aide the sort of discussion that brings people together? Pete read me a racist rant by one of my cousins this morning that I'm sure she would characterize as patriotic. To use a Toadism, she's from Whiteysvile Whitesconsin so has no zero zip nada interactions with anybody more foreign than the occasional naturalized Pakistani doctor.

Facebook divides, because we only interact in short snippets with people we mostly already know. The relationships we've already formed in that regard can only be spoiled and cause us discomfort.

A format like the Cellar, on the other hand, unites, precisely because we are exposed to people we don't know, who are given a chance to discuss their beliefs in a longer format. And if it turns out we still hate some of those folks after all, there's no net loss to our social comfort because we never knew/liked them to begin with.

here we can learn just Why we hate folks , and argue about it , and call each other Poopyheads and asshats ;)
