How Your Cat Is Making You Crazy

Jaroslav Flegr is no kook. And yet, for years, he suspected his mind had been taken over by parasites that had invaded his brain. So the prolific biologist took his science-fiction hunch into the lab. What he’s now discovering will startle you. Could tiny organisms carried by house cats be creeping into our brains, causing everything from car wrecks to schizophrenia?

Diz drives me crazy, but keeps me sane.

I went to bed last night absolutely raging at my Mum.
I sat up in bed determined to have it out with her when she came home.
This is rare for me, as I'm usually just terrified of her.

Diz fell asleep in my arms.
Totally floppy.
I switched the light off and fell asleep too, propped up on pillows with a furry bundle in my arms.

(Okay I woke at about 01.30 and was angry all over again, but the urge to confront had disappeared)

Generally, I'm not against hunting or fishing, and as long as
it's fair chase, I don't really worry if it's for meat or trophy.
(Oregon has rules against "wastage" and, for example, there is a lot
of catch-and-release in fishing, and a many go out for kodak-hunts.)

But then we have a few hunters here in Oregon that hunt mountain lion, and brag on how good it tastes.
Personally, I think they are really just bragging on how "manly" they are.
They certainly will not hear any warnings about toxoplasmosis.

if Flegr is right, the “latent” parasite may be quietly tweaking the connections between our neurons, changing our response to frightening situations, our trust in others, how outgoing we are, and even our preference for certain scents. And that’s not all. He also believes that the organism contributes to car crashes, suicides, and mental disorders such as schizophrenia. When you add up all the different ways it can harm us, says Flegr, “Toxoplasma might even kill as many people as malaria, or at least a million people a year.”
hmmmm....

It appears that its not the crazy cat lady after all. According to the article, the virus actually makes women "more outgoing, trusting, image-conscious, and rule-abiding than uninfected women". Instead, its the crazy cat guy. It seems the virus makes men "more introverted, suspicious, oblivious to other people’s opinions of them, and inclined to disregard rules".

Whew. I was really worried when I started reading about this thing, because for sure I have to be infected. I've pretty much had a cat or two in my life since I was born.

You people keep ruining my comfortable assumptions. Now I have to plot the end of Ray's (teh cat) subversive activities.

I gotta say - my son's cat has been THE BEST thing for him.

SPUCK 02-21-2012 05:18 AM

I for one welcome our new overlords.

But I don't even have a cat.
