Google Earth Street View

Since Google enhanced Street View (and by 'enhanced', I mean butt-fucked in the mouth) to the point of being barely usable, I switched back to GE 5.2. I just like the way Street View works in 5.2 compared the piece of shit it became in 6.0.

I was almost happy. I was happy enough.

Shoulda just killed myself then.

About an hour and a half ago, I wanted to see the view from the street of a place I know. To the Google! Find my place, click to open the side panel. Click Street View......WTF?

Where is my Street View layer? Don't give me that 'Pegman will appear on the right side of the screen when you're zoomed in close enough' crap. I got rid of the then current version to get rid of that shit altogether. I'm talking previous, stable, version 5.2 here.

The option to choose the Street View layer is gone. Simply disappeared. Been there almost two years. Gone, like it was never there to begin with. And Pegman ain't coming.

Ok, fukkit. Re-install. I even have a stand alone install file, none of that 'download a downloader to download the file that never gets stored on my computer'.

I'm patting myself on the back for thinking to keep that file, while its installing.

Re-install finishes. Start my brand spanking, splinter-fired new, still shiny GE version 5.2.

No Street View. Pegman don't show up, (why would he? He don't exist yet.) I even expanded every single little '+' sign on my side panel to see if it decided to become sentient and it was walking around GE 5.2, and maybe it just wasn't home when I came calling.

It ain't there. And it don't look like it's coming back.

Oh, I tried to search around, see if someone else was having the same problem. Talk about going around in circles, next time you have a day or two to kill give that a shot. All the posts in the forums and bb's concerning StreetView are either talking about GE 6, or they're dated two or three years ago, and are irrelevant (shut up spellcheck, i know how to spell irrelevant, I thought) anyway.

And, yes. I checked in places I knew for a fact had Street View imagery.

Anybody know wtf is up with this? Maybe GE is not letting older versions access the database on which the Street View images are stored? Maybe they arbitrarily decided to adopt the opinion of 'Use this version.' 'But this version smells like Afghan goat ass.' 'Fuck you, use it.'

I'm starting to get the impression that Google just might suck donkey balls.

It's kinda like the internet version of "Goddamn the Pusher". They give us all this wonderful shit, for free, cause, you know, who's your buddy? Then they do the equivalent of taking it away, they fuck it up. And we're supposed to come runnning to Google for our fix, willing to do anything, arm out, tied-up, vein ready for that Googledermic needle that we all love.

It's ok, though, man. I don't have a problem. I can quit anytime I want to.

If I could just get these godDAMNED BUGS OUTTA MY SKIN!!!!!

I don't know, but I was noticing recently that GE street view was worse than it used to be. Hard to navigate and look around. But then I later went into Google Maps in my browser, and there it had the old, good street view. So I don't know.

[tangent] This thread inspired me to wander back into Google Maps to see if they'd updated the street view for our house since the original (no,) and then I went to check my dad's neighborhood, because he's super paranoid about privacy and it's always funny to point and laugh and say, "Uh oh, now the bad guys know you bought a new car sometime in the last three years!" And a little farther down, there is a big blurry block over one of his neighbor's houses, from every angle. I had never actually seen what Google does when you request to be removed from street view, but I guess that's what it looks like.

I should also note that I ran GE in DirectX mode, OpenGL mode, and Safe mode.

No joy.

Also, does anyone else using Firefox get the blinking black screen when using Google Maps Street View?

I've been getting this for over a year.

plt, go check out my profile picture. I'm not smoking a cigarette, but if I had been, you could have easily seen it...

eta: so, interior courtyards are super popular in your neighborhood, eh?

Today, I was on Google Map and found myself on Chapel House Rd in Nelson, England
I noticed the "time" in street view feature.

Things haven't changed a lot between 2009 and 2014.
The same 2 cars are parked in their same places.

Although the neighbor on the side-street has a different car
and is now parking on the "wrong" side of the street.
... maybe it's a family relative visiting from the U.S.

You mean they drive on the left but cross traffic to park on the right side?

Lamplighter 03-31-2015 08:59 PM

How else to explain the English parking rules

...left = right = wrong = left...

Yes, it is permissible to do that but it tends to happen on quieter roads.
The deterrent to doing it on busier roads is that it is a pain in the arse trying to pull out across one lane of traffic coming towards you before joining your 'own' lane.

There's a convenience store a few minutes walk from here that attracts a lot of early morning trade. You can see a couple of cars which are parked 'against the traffic'. On dark winter mornings, drivers who are in a hurry leave their headlights on while they dash in to buy a newspaper or sandwich. Unfortunately, the beam from the headlights is then directed towards oncoming vehicles which is hazardous.
It's a question of the lights being bright but the drivers being dim.
