August 3, 2011 Aurora Australis

This striking aurora image was taken during a geomagnetic storm that was most likely caused by a coronal mass ejection from the Sun on May 24, 2010. The [International Space Station] was located over the Southern Indian Ocean at an altitude of 350 kilometers (220 miles), with the astronaut observer most likely looking towards Antarctica (not visible) and the South Pole.

'coronal mass ejection' sounds so dirty.

CaliforniaMama 08-03-2011 10:52 AM

This picture actually looks better as a thumbnail, but it is still very striking.

I learned something new: at the North Pole these are called aurora borealis and at the South Pole they are called aurora australis.

I hope you all don't mind me posting so many pictures. I love pictures! I don't mean to be taking over or anything.

It definitely looks like some kind of ejection, too.

I'd so love to see either the Northern or Southern Lights.
A lifetime ambition, probably not going to be realised.

If'n I'm going to be picky, it would be the Aurora Australis from Antartica.

Growing up in Northern Minnesota you would see them at least once a year in the winter time. If you were a night owl I would say bout 2-3 times each winter you would see them.

They are very magical, like an orchestra of light the way they dance across the sky.

I saw them while in the Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada, in the spring.

It's no great show of intellectual courage to agree with Clodfobble, and I do, enthusiastically. Please continue!
