3700 Post offices to close
The complete list here:
http://about.usps.com/news/electroni.../statelist.htm Looks like we're finally going to 5 day service also. |
Looks like western PA is getting slammed.

That link is awesome, because that right there is an astounding collection of dying American place names you never heard of.
There are Englandy names in New England, Eskimo names in Alaska, but every state has its charm. There are always names where somebody clearly said "This is my town, so it's gonna be called Undertoadville." But there are also bizarre names like Pep (Texas), Defiance (Pennsylvania). Pompeii, Michigan "I know, let's name our town after one of the most widely known major natural disasters in history!" Or Bivalve, Maryland, whose tiny Wikipedia entry sadly notes, "Bivalve takes its name from the oyster, upon which the town's economy once depended. Currently there is no economy to speak of." |
I was actually thinking the same thing. Most of the Colorado towns are ones I have never heard of. Although one of them was the town my husband's ex grew up in. Take that, ex-town of ex-wife of my husband!
Actually it makes me kind of sad. |
I could do without saturday delivery.
They can take tuesday away, too. It's all just adverts. |
I'm going to miss Saturday delivery because of Netflix. But I understand why they need to do it.

B FREE FRANKLIN PHILADELPHIA 19106
Is this the post office inside the Ben Franklin exhibit at 3rd and Market? Shit. Yes it is. I actually thought that the office would be profitable because of the souvenirs it sold. |

However, some POs that should have been closed long ago are still open and not listed. For example Lackawaxen PA 18345, Shohola PA 18458, Barryville NY 12719, and Yulan NY 12792. All but one could have been eliminated. Traffic in all is that minimal. Apparently a Post Office for Yankee Stadium will be eliminated. |
Our mailbox is a block and a half away from our house, and we usually forget to go get it on Saturdays anyway, so I won't miss weekend delivery. But strangely enough, despite 8 post offices in Houston, 4 in Dallas, I think 6 in Fort Worth, another several in Metroplex suburbs, and 2 in San Antonio... not a single post office in Austin or the surrounding suburbs is closing.

It has probably been long over due to have a list like this come out. I can't say that I will miss Sat. delivery all that much.
