Face off

When I first saw this headline, I thought of the Nicholas Cage/John Travolta movie. I saw visions of Ebay auctions on recently dead "attractive" faces. How much would they sell for? What would the ad line look like? "Would you like to look 25 years old again, a motorcycle crash victim's loss is your gain (only minor bruising on chin)!" Yikes! Very scary.

As it turns out though, this new "face off - face on" procedure is more for the benefit of young disfigured people. It seems like a good thing to me. Maybe having someone else wear my face after I'm dead wouldn't be such a bad thing.

Nah, it's still creepy. What will they think of next? Don't answer that, I'm not ready for these advances. Anyway, here's the article

I seem to recall (after the kidney fiasco) that ebay does not permit auctions of human body parts.

I would think not...given that eBay is based in the US, and the selling of organs is illegal. Then again, people were selling XBox boxes (not the Xbox, but the box that it came in) on there last year.

So, there's this wife and husband...and the wife is in a serious car crash. Her face is rather disfigured; however, the doctors can help put the woman's face back together with donated skin. They tell the husband of this, and he gladly volunteers some of his own. They take some of the skin from his buttocks to help reconstruct her face, and the surgery is a success.

Later on, the wife says to her husband, "I am so lucky to have someone like you!"

"Think nothing of it," the husband says. "I get rewarded every time your mother kisses your face."

Yes, I guess Ebay is a bad example with this. It was the first thing that came to mind but seems pretty unlikely.

Ok, here's a better scenario.

A guy with a van flagging people on the side walk. "Psst, hey you're ugly, wanna buy a new face (opens the rear door to the van exposing coolers full of ice with plastic wrapped faces for sale)?"

Here in Philadelphia, we have vendors that sometimes set up shop on vacant gas station lots. Some sell sports merchandise (Flyers, Sixers, and Eagles stuff); others sell flowers.

The future: Body parts. Kidneys for $50 a pop. Get 'em while they're cold!

I think Larry Niven nailed it when he did those stories on organleggers ...

This is done.

I don't think she shopped eBay either. Sounds like a cool story, with a happy ending.
