when launching certain programs others try to install

When I launch certain applications, just now it was Duplicate Cleaner, I get an install wizard pop-up telling me that quickbooks is trying to install or Microsoft Office is trying to install. I just keep hitting cancel until the desired application launches. WTF is up with that?

Which virus checker do you use and what does it say?

squirell nutkin 09-13-2010 10:24 AM

I use kaspersky and it says everything is peachy.

xoxoxoBruce 09-13-2010 10:28 AM

Automatic updates, you're refusing, that keep accumulating?

squirell nutkin 09-13-2010 01:02 PM

hmm. I just started an object scan and it seems things are far from peachy. I'm not sure how that all happened, but it seems like my hard drive is actually a crack house.
:(

xoxoxoBruce 09-13-2010 01:20 PM

That's bad, but it may attract some crack ho's. :o

Your Microsoft Installer is screwed up

A system component, Microsoft Installer, is screwed up.

What version of Windows do you have?

squirell nutkin 09-14-2010 11:08 AM

Hi mbpark,
I'm running XP. Can I re-install MS Installer? (that seems ironic) How does it get screwed up?

mbpark 09-14-2010 11:14 AM

yes you can`

Sure,

Download it from here: http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...288-v3-x86.exe

Microsoft Installer relies on an internal database, and a lot of files stored in C:\windows\installer. Sometimes the DB gets corrupt in older versions of the product.

You perhaps by chance didn't delete any of those files, did you? :)

Anything is possible. Sometimes I get deletion happy, followed by deletion sad.
