10/11/02: The hat
 

I bought a 2600 hat a while back, and it came in the mail a few days ago. I've only worn it to school one day, and already two different people have walked up to me and given me engaging conversations because of it. It's really strange.. I honestly thought I was one of maybe 7 or 8 people on the entire campus who would even know the reference. Apparently that's not the case, though.

One of the two people was a reporter for the local newspaper. He came up to me at the "Power of Porn" lecture I mentioned in the other thread. He told me he was the guy at the paper who everyone called to help fix their computers. We had a short conversation, and he even gave me his card and said to call him and we'd talk more.

I was a little taken aback. Am I actually interesting enough to trade phone numbers with? Does he really want to subject himself to my inane verbal stumbling when I first call him up to chat and have no idea what to say? Perhaps it was more of a reflex for him. He likely has a very large stack of cards in his pocket, and he gives one to every single person that he has even the briefest conversation with. Reporters have to network, you know.

The other person was a girl I came across on the way to class. She was all like, "Where'd you get the hat? I love the magazine!" Oh yeah..chicks dig geeks.

Anyway, I think I look better without a hat, but I think i'll wear it to school a couple more days. I'm curious how many other people will come up to me and say something about it.
