10/10/02: Public Bulletin Board
http://comp.uark.edu/~dmorton/images/misc/porn_sign.jpg
These signs were placed all over campus this week by the local bible-thumpers. Seven of them were set up in the most well-trafficked areas. They were initially blank, except for the main question at the top. A permanant marker was atttached to each sign with a string, for students to write down their opinions. They were extremely popular, and almost all the comments were pro-porn. Apparently, students love to talk about porn. Of course, I couldn't resist writing a link to the Cellar on the first day they were up. I unwittingly started a trend, and people starting writing other URLs on other boards. Still, despite the graffiti, there ended up being an awful lot of intelligent comments written down. This is the closest i've ever seen to a real-life non-computer BBS. I think it's a really cool idea. Hopefully it will be done more often in the future. hi-res pics (around 100-300k each): http://comp.uark.edu/~dmorton/images...porn1_0001.JPG http://comp.uark.edu/~dmorton/images...porn1_0003.JPG http://comp.uark.edu/~dmorton/images...porn1_0008.JPG http://comp.uark.edu/~dmorton/images...porn2_0003.JPG http://comp.uark.edu/~dmorton/images...porn2_0004.JPG http://comp.uark.edu/~dmorton/images...orn2_0016b.JPG |
I especially like the comment "Thank God for DSL". :)

What is that sticker on the right?
|
You mean on the left? That's a flyer for a talk for the "Power of Porn" lecture that one of the Christian organizations put on. That's what the signs are supposed to be advertising. They got an ex-preacher/porn addict and an ex-stripper to talk about their lives. I went, and it was okay. I don't think they convinced anyone, though.

Not quite the same, but somewhat related: this article in the Philadelphia Weekly.

One of those things that does a good job of driving people away from Christianity.
