I need a new mouse

I've been using a 1-button optical mouse for several months cuz it worked better for me. For right-clicking, I used the context menu key on my keyboard. However, I now find that I need a 2-button mouse. Now, I know you can buy a 2-button optical almost anywhere, but I need one that also has a way to keep my index finger on the left mouse button so I don't accidentally click the right mouse button with it?

Any ideas?

What if you cut a little piece of index card into a rectangle about 2 inches long and one inch high, and stuck it upright in between the mouse buttons? Kind of a gentle barrier to keep the fingers on the correct side. Or does it need to be stronger than that?

You could just get a mouse with a scroll wheel in the middle between the right and left button. Seems like it would work.

I thought of that, but my hands aren't steady enough for that kind of intricate work. Besides, how would I get it to stay? It would have to sit on the mouse wheel.

What I'd need is something that built-in.

The question there is, can I find one that has the wheel raised up enough to act as a barrier between the left and right mouse buttons?

can you do a track ball at all?

There are self curing epoxy putties out there that you could use to modify an existing mouse. Some are intended to stick to plastic.

Maybe you have someone who could help you knead the putty and apply it to a mouse in a way that would be comfortable for your hand and fingers?

How about an actual trackball?

Not cheap, but I had one years ago and loved it. Maybe it's time for another.

Did you try it for a while? I mean, do you think it won't work for you, or was it just uncomfortable and you didn't think it would work? The reason I ask is, I use a track ball and I love it, even brought one from home for work, but if a cow orker needs to do something on my computer it usually freaks them out. Once I got used to it, I can't stand to use a regular mouse anymore, moving that base around is annoying, and it bothers my arm (had a double compound fracture of my wrist a few years ago.) Once you've had track, you never go back. :D

Just wondered.

Can you use your thumb?

What about something like this:

This was one microsoft guy's solution to the same problem, but I don't think you can buy them like this:

I have always pursued the best Logitech gear.

The Logitech driver software is rather full-featured. They let you reprogram all the mouse buttons, including disabling them if you like.

The Performance MX I'm using now has about ten different "control surfaces" that do something! But one could disable most of them, then assign the thumb button to right-click and disable the right click, or even make the right mouse button and left mouse button function as left click.

When I had my recent shoulder problems and couldn't click, I dug out an old Logitech trackball and had both mouse and trackball hooked up at the same time. I used my right hand to move the mouse pointer and my left hand to click.
