Recommendation re: Torchwood books

I know I can count on my fangirls here. I want to download an audiobook--are there some that are not good?

DanaC 12-18-2009 07:34 PM

Ummm.....*thinks*

I kind of like all of them, but then I would. If you're looking for a narrated book, rather than a cast audio, probably best not to go for the ones read by Barrowman. He's lovely and all, but he makes all the characters sound like versions of Jack.

Everybody Says Hello, read by Burn Gorman is a good one.

If you're going for the cast audios, avoid the first one (can't recall the title but it's set around the Large Hadron Collider): it feels creaky and gimmicky and the actors all sound like they;re stood in a studio talking into a microphone. Asylum is excellent, as is Deadline.

brb; (walks upstairs to look at my other 'puter with itunes on it)

thank you; I bought Hello, as it was longer (some of the others were very cheap, but only 44 minutes long)

If the 44 minute ones were the full-cast audio plays then give them a go sometime, they're really engaging (but not the LHC one)

I will, thanks. I'm driving to Albuquerque tomorrow and back (like 8 hours drive time), so I wanted a few things to listen to. I also downloaded the first book of The Belgariad. I like to listen to stuff I'm familiar with.

There are a couple that I know are good stories, but havent heard the audio reading of them:Border Princes and Slow Decay. Another Life was a good story but I wasn't keen on Barrowman's reading of it. Much better as a novel.

The first three were abridged audio versions of existing books. After that they started doing stories specifically for audio. I rather liked Hidden

There's an absolutely brilliant Doctor Who audio book I listened to recently. has an awful title, but David Tennant is a superb reader. It's like having a cast of characters, he's brilliant. The story is really good too. It's very atmospheric, a really good spooky tale, with sound effects that give it a serious chill. It's called The Day of the Troll and is about 2 and a half hours long. Very well produced.

I've been meaning to buy some of the books, too. I will check these out!

I really enjoyedThe Sin Eaters. It's good fun and Gareth David-Lloyd narrates - he has a lovely, lovely voice. I've listened to it while falling asleep before (as opposed to fallen asleep listening to it).

ETA - I don't have Everybody Says Hello yet (I buy the audio books/ dramas when I see them second hand on or sale) so no spoilers please! The precis sounds great, so it will be next on my list.

best audio book in my collection: A Game of Thrones by George R R Martin. Roy Dotrice is a fantastic narrator. There are 4 books in the series right now, and Roy does the 1st 3. the 4th one is narrated by John Lee.....who's OK..but Roy is really head and shoulders above him.

Sorry to cut in, Jim.

I listened to Everybody Says Hello in Amsterdam.
I had to listen to it again when I got home, one way or another...
Since then I have been going around sying "Hello!" in Burn's Welsh accent. I was surprised to hear the only accent he didn't really nail was Jack's. Perhaps he was too wary of doing an impression of him. I should think any actor would be able to do an American accent after all (simply because of the prevalence of American accents on TV/ in films).

I did enjoy it though.
I had some saucy Torchwood dreams in the 'Dam from listening to it late at night.
Well, that and other reasons ;)
