"This Economy"

The term 'economy' is losing it's meaning, and morphing into something akin to 'the boogie man'.

I keep hearing ridiculous references to 'the economy' made in what seem unrelated areas.

companies that are making normal or even better money than last year are using it as an excuse to thin work forces and demand more production form the employees that remain. The health care industry has been largely unaffected by 'this economy', and yet, a woman (big shot VP for a medical scheduling company....$300k on her app)i spoke to yesterday told me she doesn't trust her employer, and getting a new job was a scary prospect. She said they'd laid off 3 execs that used to work under her, even though the workload had actually increased.....but no one had the balls to bitch because they were worried about 'this economy'.

jeesus.

pepto bismol had record sales last quarter. so did hershey's chocolate.

opportunistic much?

'Why do you beat your wife?'

'....well, in this economy, a man has to maintain order in his home...'

Eh.

All pretty much predictable in "this economy". I see a trend at work where people are fearful of speaking up about important issues because they don't want to be seen as rocking the boat or being labled as troublemakers, hence opening up themselves to being the first on the short list of lay offs. How many times have you heard someone at work say, "It's good to still be employed." or, "At least I still have a job." Employers know this as well and I see a palpable power shift occuring back into the hands of those who control the jobs. What say you?

Came, saw, stole, renamed, resold it to the world as British culture.
