Amish Country, Ohio

MIL (aka Banana Lady) is visiting from UK and fancies a jaunt for a few days, so we're headed for Amish country -Strasburg and environs- next Weds-Fri. Will try to take some pics to post, but meanwhile if anyone has recommendations for places to visit/eat/shop etc or lives over that way and fancies a coffee/beer..... No. I will not be donning a bonnet.

Getting pics of all the lovely puppy mills?

monster 04-10-2009 08:36 PM

might pass on that :(

monster 04-10-2009 08:37 PM

Didn't know that about the region. are they Amish-run or just in that area?

Bullitt 04-10-2009 08:47 PM

There just are some in that area. The Amish are some of the warmest, most friendly people you will ever meet. Don't know what would float your boat, but check this site out and I'm sure you'll find something interesting: http://www.oacountry.com/.

The amish aren't the only ones, but the amish counties in PA and OH are apparently lousy with puppy mills.

Thanks, been there done that.... that and visitamishcountry.com which has the most annoying series of links you must click to get to the (very useful) calendar -it's like the Amish work ethic on the internet ;) What floats my boat is just chilling for two days in the countryside. MIL likes crafts and seeing the American countryside and -I think- doesn't really believe that the Amish exist in today's world, so she's just out to prove we were making it up! . We'll probably cruise by a couple of flea markets.

So, those mini-shelter thingies by the side of the road. WTF are they for?

Bullitt 04-18-2009 10:59 PM

kids waiting for the school bus usually. We typically have a number of winter days that hover around 0 degrees.

xoxoxoBruce 04-19-2009 01:17 AM

But Amish kids don't take the bus or even go to regular schools, they would have to be Mennonites or "English".
Oh, and in PA at least, the Amish drive gray buggies and the black buggies are Mennonites.

Monster, if you can find it, National Geographic did an excellent article on the Amish in Ohio. It might be in their archives online.

but only the lower grades of elementary kids would fit in them..... they're only about 4 feet high ....or do they all kneel in prayer while waiting for the bus?

oh, and you soft lot! -we're in bloody Michigan, it doesn't get above zero for weeks on end, but no shelters at the bus stops here.....

xoxoxoBruce 04-19-2009 05:22 PM

They won't be any warmer than outside, but it helps with the wind, rain, and lightning.

monster 04-19-2009 05:23 PM

hmm metal shelters.... I'll pass thanks  -no wonder they're made to kneel in!

xoxoxoBruce 04-19-2009 05:25 PM

Metal? Are they ground level or on a raised platform?
