I doubt funny commercials are going to make Vista suck any less.

Maybe it's just me...but....I don't get it. I didn't even know it was a commercial for vista. I was just confused as hell.

It's not a commercial for a specific product; it's more of an overall "company image" kind of ad. They want you to think Microsoft is on the cutting edge of things, instead of falling further and further behind developing crap like Vista.

It's not that Vista is that bad. Vista will have teething problems since it is basically a completely rewritten OS. Windows 95 got the exact same criticisms. But Microsoft has a much larger problem. It is now being led by one without a vision. Ballmer is the classic MBA. He has no vision for Microsoft's future. He is trying to play catch-up on mature markets (ie Search) rather than channeling his company into new frontiers.

Google is what Microsoft should be doing - testing new markets with new products - sometimes dispensed in new ways.

Ballmer's lack of focus was demonstrated in the Yahoo fiasco. I give Ballmer much credit for walking away from a deal that could not happen. But Microsoft did not know what it wanted from Yahoo. Somehow if MSFT bought a big company, then it would have solved their problems? That is the same myth by another bimbo named Carly Fiorina when she enriched Compaq stockholders with a windfall profit. Fiorina used the same logic. We will be #1 or #2 in every market - therefore we will be profitable. Such M&A myths are common among those who don't understand business – who confuse a business’s objective with profits. Fiorina even violated principles that Bill and Dave used and John Chambers used to make growing and productive companies.

Now Ballmer wants to do the same thing. Even paying for expensive commercials (that also run too long) as if propaganda will fix his lack of vision. Only a fool throws big bucks like a grenade to obtain a solution.

I saw the commercial last night. I liked it; admittedly, I'm a weirdo.

classicman 09-08-2008 01:02 PM

I thought the ad was terrible - I saw the beginning several times and clicked off it. The last time I watched the whole thing (couldn't find the remote fast enough) and it was terrible, absolutely terrible.

lookout123 09-08-2008 01:26 PM

I saw a commercial that was basically "vista doesn't suck as much as you think". They brought people in to beta the "next new" microsoft operating system and they loved it. it was wunderbar! then they were all laughs and happy happy when they found out they could own it right now - it's VISTA! tadaa!

Shawnee123 09-08-2008 02:23 PM

I guess the reason I like the commercial well enough is that I don't really have any strong opinions for or against Microsoft. It's really all I've ever known. Haven't tried Vista yet.

It's no worse than the PC (bumbling fat guy) vs MAC (cute young guy who, apparently, gets laid due to his choice of computer) commercials.

I long for the days of 3.1. ;)

lookout123 09-08-2008 02:26 PM

I've got Vista on my machine because it was the only thing available and I'm not cool enough to bother getting rid of it. It hasn't really caused me any problems I'm aware of.

You have to wonder what the board meetings are like at MS when they have to say, "OK, we need a multmillion dollar ad campaign to explain to the consumers that our newest product doesn't suck as bad as they think it does". Not a good meeting.

I liked the farce aspect: Seinfeld asking if, in the future, PCs would be made out of cake and we could eat them while we worked on them. If so, adjust your shorts. Gates wiggles butt, presumably adjusting shorts.

Eh, made me giggle a little.

But I was high. ;)

AN OPEN MIND
I went into this commercial with an open mind. I didn't want to assume that I wouldn't like the commercial, just because I've had a hellish experience with Vista machines.

NOTHING IS LESS FUNNY THAN OVER-EXPLAINING
Jerry sees Gates. In the shoe store. He says. There is Gates. In the shoe store. We saw him see it. And then we heard him say it. The premise of the commercial is officially ruined, in the first 10 seconds.

WHAT IS IT? LEATHER.
It's leather. For . . . f i v e . . . s e c o n d s.

MAYBE IT WILL GET BETTER...
It didn't. Forced Seinfeld gags, just like in the popular TV show (!!!) except not funny. Hey, look, the bystanders are in on the catch-phrases!

I CAN'T EVEN KEEP TYPING THIS.
It just sucked. Nothing funny about it. Nothing.

jinx 09-08-2008 10:14 PM

Your mother thinks it's funny.

I got this laptop in Dec, came with Vista. I haven't had any problems. It has even run things it's not supposed to run, like my beloved Diablo II Lord of Destruction. No problems hooking up to my home wireless network.

Most of my friends for some reason have problems setting up and running printers, and home wireless. I've had no problems helping them make both run on their vista machines.

I do prefer my Mac G4, not because of any real vista problems, it's just easier for me to work with, comparatively. I'm looking forward to next years planned purchase of a Mac powerbook.

Me, i just don't see the hoopla good or bad about vista.
