Tie me Wallaby down, mate

Minn. Man Finds His AWOL Wallaby

CHAMPLIN, Minn. (AP) - Dave Carlson says the police in this north-metro suburb thought he was joking when he called to report that his wallaby went AWOL. "And then they wanted to know what a wallaby was," he said. "I explained it was like a kangaroo, but smaller."

Rachet, the 1 1/2-year-old wallaby, went missing recently from Carlson's backyard. Carlson believes someone let the animal out of its kennel, so Carlson called the cops.

He then did what any loving pet owner would do: He put missing marsupial fliers up in the neighborhood and posted a lost pet ad on Craigslist that said "LOST KANGAROO."

The text of the ad read: "Well, he's not a kangaroo but he is my pet wallaby. ... He looks just like a kangaroo but only about 2.5 ft tall and wearing a blue harness."

"He's such a great pet," said Carlson, who also owns two parrots, a dog and a cat. "He's very personable."

A day after Rachet disappeared, Champlin police called Carlson with good news: a wallaby had been spotted by a person waiting for a bus near Carlson's house.

Carlson said the caller told police, "I may need to go to a psych ward, but I think I saw a kangaroo go by."

Then, Carlson chased his wily wallaby for about 30 minutes.

"Every time I got close, he ran again," he said.

Eventually, Carlson nabbed Rachet.

"I didn't think I would ever see him again," said Carlson, who is keeping Rachet in the basement until he can secure the kennel. "He's extremely hard to catch. And when I did, I thought, 'Ahhhh, yes.'"

I doff my cap to anyone who can catch a wallaby.

And the students' song of Adelaide University is Bestiality's Best, to the tune of Tie Me kangaroo Down, Mate.

Chorus
Bestiality's best, mate, bestiality's best
(F#$% a wallaby)
Bestiality's best, mate, bestiality's best

Stick ya dick in a pig, mate, stick ya dick in a pig
(F#$% a wallaby)
Stick ya dick in a pig, mate, stick ya dick in a pig

Why? 'cause...
Chrorus

Unload ya load on a toad, mate, unload ya load on a toad
(F#$% a Wallaby)
Unload ya load on a toad, mate, unload ya load on a toad

Why? 'cause ...
Chorus

etc.

Sounds like a rugby song. :D

that song is so disgusting Zen.

I wonder how someone gets a permit to keep a wallaby. You're not allowed to keep marsupials as pets here that I know of, although plenty of people have 'adopted' them from the wild. They're still not domesticated as such (well not in general anyway).

oh, god. I think I had one of those wobbly music boards when that song came out.

Aliantha 01-11-2008 11:04 PM

who could ever forget the inimitable Rolf Harris. My mother loved him. So did British Paints. (sure can!)

Cloud 01-11-2008 11:07 PM

maybe I'm hallucinating that board thing. You were supposed to play it to the song--like a saw. That was a looooong time ago!

Aliantha 01-11-2008 11:11 PM

you have it right Cloud. He did a lot of little ditties using his wobble board. Other people have tried to do it, but it's just not the same.

It's a rhythm device more than anything. It always makes groups of little kids kinda wiggle about in time to the music.

Surely you have not forgotten (unless you have deliberately repressed) the Rolf Harris wobbleboard cover version of Stairway to Heaven ...

...which reached NUMBER SEVEN on the UK singles charts in 1993 !!!

DanaC 01-12-2008 08:37 AM

Ooowwww. Zen...i had forgotten that.

My favourite Rolfie hit was Two Little Boys.

Aliantha 01-12-2008 06:14 PM

two little boys with two little toys...

Ahuh...yep, I know what HE was thinking about!

Wallaby

Well, this guy with his pet wallaby probably won't be keeping him much longer, at least in the city of Champlin. I happen to be the officer that took the initial report of his wallaby missing. He's telling everyone that he received permission from the city before he bought it. That's not true. The city of Champlin has very strict ordinances, especially ones concerning wild animals. He never would have received permission to keep one in the first place. Now that the city knows about it, most likely he will have to find a new home for it.

Hey, welcome to the Cellar, Mshenk64.... officer, sir. :D

Many thanks for dropping in to give us the straight scoop.

Cloud 01-13-2008 11:29 AM

cool! thanks for posting!

Aliantha 01-13-2008 04:31 PM

So if this dude is keeping this wallaby and he doesn't have a permit, it only stands to reason that he got it from someone who was willing to sell it to him without ensuring he had the correct permit which then suggests that the person he bought it from was not a registered dealer.

What's the likelihood that someone will follow up on this and find out how he came to have the animal?
