Hi everybody, I'm new here as of yesterday. I'm sure it'll take time for me to get to know everybody here, but in the meantime I had a somewhat geeky (or was that "geekly"?) question about this site.

If I were to post a link here to a site hosted on a low-medium bandwidth broadband connection (cable modem, ADSL, etc.), will it get crushed into a pile of burning cinders by the bandwidth demands? Fark, Slashdot, etc. have all gotten so big that posting a link is basically inviting a DOS attack to that site. To be honest, I'm afraid to even post my personal website URL there, and it sorta sucks having to keep that distance and anonymity due to technical constraints. I just don't have a feel for the size of this cellar yet.

So what's the scoop?

Hard to say. You won't get /.ed by the regular Cellar Dwellars... there just aren't enough of us, frankly. But if UT has an ad running on Fark and there's a lot of guest traffic coming through the site, anything's liable to happen.

Why not post your link and see what happens? If you run into trouble, you can always run home to the "deny" command in access.conf or .htaccess, as the case may be, until things cool down.

Yeah, poking around, it doesn't look like there's so much volume here that it'd be a problem. Thanks for the confirmation.

As always, a work in progress, but I'm trying to keep it clean. It's mostly a repository for pictures taken from my digital camera at the moment. I'm feeling somewhat inpired today, so there may be some changes unless I get side-tracked by work...

What script do you use for your photo gallery? Or did you write it yourself?

BTW --- we have the same taste in music.

The photo library script is YAPPA. It's a free (as in beer and as in speech) PGP script, and I'm about in love with it. Once you have it set up, all you have to do to create albums and add pictures is create directories and add files to them. It generates the thumbnails the first time somebody hits the page. So, in essense, your photo repository *IS* your website. Awesome, awesome script. I need to futz w/ the colors so that it fits the site a little better, however.

Just wish I could find something similar for movie files (.MOV, .MPG, .AVI, etc.).

Man. I have over 20 gigs of MP3s (over 4,000 individual files) and I've only ripped about half of my CDs. Good lord.

The good news is that I just got a 120GB 120GXP from my buddies at IBM and 2 18GB U160 IBM's. Plus, I have a free Adaptec 29160 coming my way, and I'll go ahead and stick my 36GB U160 Seagate Cheetah on there too. 72 GB of U160 goodness. Ahhhhhhhhh.

Anyway... yeah. I have a shitload of disk space in my main boxes, and I have a shitload of files soaking up that disk space. :)

Yeah, it's amazing how quickly the space gets chewed up, huh? I'm actually holding off on ripping my CDs until I figure out a better system. My goal is to come up w/ a system whereby I don't have to set aside a bunch of time to rip CDs, per se, but instead I just play each CD as I feel like hearing it and it's ripped automatically as it plays. Then I never have to use that physical CD again. Kinda like RealJukebox, but in simple, convenient setup that is more like a stereo component and, um, wife-friendly. There are few hardware devices out there that will do this, but it's all still too expensive.

I may end up actually using RealJukebox for now. I can't believe TiVo isn't all over this; it's a *perfect* platform. Maybe when they release an external CD drive for the new USB-capable TiVo they'll build audio ripping/playing capabilities into the software...?

Anyhow, I'm up for MP3 ripper/player suggestions... Anybody?

iTunes. It's awesome.

I'm a UNIX geek, but I've got two Macs at home - PowerMac and an iBook. MacOS X is awesome and iTunes is <b>easily</b> the best mp3 playing/organizing program I've ever seen. Ever.

Do yourself a favor and next time you're buying a computer, get a Mac. You'll thank yourself later. :)

blowme: Yeah, the trippin thing about that pic is that it's in the ski village, literally 100ft away from the base of the lift. I took that pic to show how warm it was based on how the waitress was dressed. The humor and modest boobie-factor are bonuses.

If anybody wants a killer place to ski/ride this fall, Whister-Blackholme in Vancouver is awesome! Cheaper than Colorado, too, due to cheap Canadian dollar.

LS or Juju, have either of you listened to Vapor Trails, yet? From what I've heard, it's awesome.
