To prevent homegrown terrorism, and for other purposes.

I have yet to find anything on the major news networks about this bill, only what I've seen on very biased blog/independent news sources like here or here.

But reading the text of the bill, I'm fucking scared.

Also, I notice that while Ron Paul didn't vote on it, Kucinich voted against.
Who's the real lover of freedom outta the two of them?
Talkin' to you here RK, kinda.

Ibram, may I suggest you either quote a few of the more interesting paragraphs, or summarize what it says and why it worries you. Just posting the link doesn't whet many appetites.
Me, I was puzzled by this bit:
Quote:

`(9) Certain governments, including the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia have significant experience with homegrown terrorism and the United States can benefit from lessons learned by those nations.
UK, yes the IRA. Spain has ETA. Japan had the red army and the aum cult. Canada, I don't know - maybe a free Quebec thing. Australia ... <scratches head> ... who???

*shrug* The Bali bombing was aimed at and killed mostly Aussies.

Yeah but it hardly counts as home grown from Australia's perspective. Maybe the bill should mention Indonesia or The Philippines.

I'm slow tonight - all the countries listed are loyal allies in the War on Terror, and can therefore probably be counted on to not rock the boat. Duh.

Wasn't there some sort of violence in Sydney a couple years ago involving foreigners? Like racial riots or something? Maybe they are referring to that.

ZenGum 11-01-2007 12:45 PM

Yeah, but that was mostly a single race riot by white people angry about the behaviour of some Lebanese migrants. Nothing of the homegrown terrorist group this bill is supposedly about.
There are a few fairly extreme mosques in Australia, that are being watched.

Damn, I just got it. They should ask Australia for advice because Australia hasn't had a domestic terror attack. Obviously the Aussie system is the best in the world at domestic security! Oh wait ... APEC ... Chaser ... farce/fiasco ... I don't think the US is going to be asking Australia for security advice anytime soon. Thats another theory down.

*Returns UT's shrug*

Was Ron Paul even there that day? May explain why, I don't know.
We are becoming the enemy.

Ibby 11-01-2007 11:48 PM

I didn't really mean that the ron paul jab was aimed at you, rk, i really meant this whole thread was - you and radar, i suppose.
