NGC Deep Sea Drillers
 

Anyone watch that on NGC?
The first thing I noticed, was that it's in gulf of Mexico and no vessels are American flagged.
I worked, till 1990 offshore and have some thoughts and comments about this program.
Think the deepest water I've worked was around 1200 ft, on the Odeco Ben Lancer, which flew the English flag. And had dynamic positioners?? and GPS.

I'll try to get a few things together about my time, welding on a pipe lay barge. Anyone interested?

1st I notice that they're drilling for gas, because it's been deregulated.
Screw oil. The rigs are old and maybe against the law. Hell They stopped using a spinning chain years ago.
And the biggest thing, is never jump on a ruff necks ass while his foot is even with your head and he has a 24" pipe wrench in hand.
christ on a flappin crutch. Back on track, maybe tomorrow. Suppose to rain all day.
Maybe $80 buck oil will get them to open up some oil?

Wow! That fascinates me. I dove to 110 feet one time (as part of advanced underwater certification) and the compression was unbelievable (took a beer coolie and it compressed to about the size of a pencil.) Deep sea diving is a whole different animal!
Did you experience nitrogen narcosis? How long does an ascent from 1200 feet take? Ever have to do a decompression chamber?

Opps. Sorry. That should have read, the deepest water I've ever worked over is 1200ft. Only time I was in water, pipe got loose and knocked me overboard. In about 20ft of water.
I worked around divers sometimes, but never liked money that much. :bolt:

For the divers among us, I’ll put this photo in. Then move rest to my BS thread and upload photos to Flickr? This guy was a friend of mine from a lay barge job. Where more friends from same job kept me working, as on the ben lancer.
Which will, I hope tie some of this story together.

Also the name of drill ship should have been Odeco ben ocean lancer. A few photos on web. Odeco is now something else. An accident looking for a place to happen was what that rig was. Damn I was glad to get off that sob.


Steve had been a diver for Taylor divers and set, at that time a world record for hyperbaric welding. Some where around 1000 ft. deep.

I believe he told me he stopped diving because they screwed up his air once.

Later he came down with Leukemia. His coonass lawyers sued brown & root and won a bunch of money. After he died. Who got the gold? Damifino.

Only have a few photos, but thought I'd look though the ones from Iran, Nigeria, Peru and Sumatra and see if any of interest and upload to flickr. That I can explain. Most of photos were scanned and bad from the word go. Beware.
