How in the heck are you cutting them so cleanly? I've been messing around with the gimp for half an hour and this is the best I can do.

Please teach me!

I don't know anything about gimp, per se, cuz I use Corel Photopaint -- I have PS as well, but I just don't like it. In Photopaint, at least, you cut out "objects" with a "mask", and there are a bunch of options to cut out based on color, etc. I considered starting a thread about "Photoshop" techniques, but if we're all using different programs I dunno how much it'd be worth..??

GIMP simply isn't good enough yet. Seriously.

I'm using Photoshop now and it's a dream. But then again, I used to use Photoshop all the time, so... it's power really is unparalleled. The Corel products are good too. Unfortunately, they got out of Linux before they ported them (I think).

Anyway, juju, you want to look for the pen tool. Zoom in, clicky clicky around what you want, complete the mask, the turn the mask into a selection. That's the best way to get an accurate cut. I think there's one in GIMP. Let me check...

Yeah. Here you go, here's an image. I did this Quick & Dirty - it took me literally 2 minutes, and I used a shitty mouse.

Use the pen tool (Bezier curves), click a path around it, when you're done, click in the first point to complete it. Then, in the layers window, look for the "Paths" tab. Click that, then click the circle at the bottom with the tooltip "Path to selection". Voila, you have it selected. Cut & paste away.

[ Edit - for some reason the image isn't showing up. Here - http://www.cellar.org/attachment.php...tachmentid=160 ]

Is this in photoshop or gimp?

juju 06-04-2002 04:32 PM

This looks a little better. I was able to accomplish it with fuzzy select. Still not perfect, though. I guess i'll have to get Photoshop.

GIMP!

Dammit, you didn't try. Go. Do it again. Try and try with the pen tool until you get it right, then post the results here. You'll quickly learn that it's the best tool available for making precise selections.

:)

Okay, well when i right-click on the image and select the 'Layers' menu, here are the options I get:

Layers & Channels
Merge Visible Layers
Flatten Image
Add Alpha Channel
Align Visible Layers

When i go into the 'Layers & Channels' window, I can't find a Paths tab. There is only a Layers tab and a Channels tab.

What version of GIMP are you using? I'm at 1.2 here.

juju 06-04-2002 04:50 PM

Gah! I'm at 1.0.4. Damn Debian... i guess i'll have to grab the newest version.

juju 06-04-2002 05:53 PM

Okay, apt-get to the rescue. I think I might have learned something here.
