U.S. Customs Seizes Sub Full of Coke

MEXICO CITY (AP) - A submarine-like vessel filled with hundreds of millions of dollars worth of cocaine was seized off the Guatemalan coast, U.S. officials said.

Four suspected smugglers were operating the self-propelled, semi- submersible vessel when it was located and seized on Sunday evening by officials from the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard, the Border Patrol said in a news release Wednesday.

When the suspects realized they had been spotted by drug-surveillance aircraft patrolling the eastern Pacific, they scuttled the vessel but were unable to escape.

Coast Guard officials, guided by the reconnaissance plane, intercepted the vessel and detained the reputed smugglers, who were transporting approximately 5.5 tons of cocaine worth $352 million, the Border Patrol said.

The interception occurred off the coast of Central America about 300 miles southwest of the Mexico-Guatemala border, the U.S. Coast Guard said in a separate statement.

Several drug-carrying submarines operated by Colombian drug cartels have been discovered in recent years.
Boy I bet their bosses are gonna be pissed at them.

I'm really thirsty. Could they send me some Coke? Or a pop? ;)

TheMercenary 08-24-2007 08:25 AM

That was pretty funny. They should have just fired a missle at it and sunk it to the bottom. I am sure the sea water would have taken care of things.

yesman065 08-24-2007 08:28 AM

yeah and then we'd have a lot of excited fish and PETA up their ass.

Maybe it's because of the flesh-eating fish, but that smacks of strange sexual undertones to me.

Probably not. It was routine even 25 years ago to scuttle the most expensive water craft after one trip. Profits from drugs are that high. Using the most expensive water craft for a one way trip is standard procedure. The coast of Georgia was described by Federal agents to be littered with burned remains of boats purchased for $hundreds of thousands.

yesman065 08-24-2007 12:37 PM

But they lost the drugs too.

If it were a problem, then the price of drugs on the street would spike. Those same Federal agents also described how such supply losses resulted in no price change. Supply and demand. Demand did not decrease. Price did not spike. Just a minor cost of doing business. Appreciate how useless the war on drugs really is when we will not acknowledge how little gets intercepted.

its not that, but these guys got busted they are in captivity, the lost the sub and they lost the drugs - no way is the boss gonna be happy - they wil be killed in detention/prison if not before - they can't risk them talkin

Maybe. But its just business.

There's a pretty good chance if they talk, they can't say anything to hurt the bosses. Too many layers of management, which like the runners, are expendable.

I'm glad to see this thread isn't about a messy lunchtime accident. That would really suck!
