Undercover Mosque

Some time ago in the UK a tv programme called Despatches, carried out an undercover investigation on several prominent mosques. What they showed was shocking.I saw it. It was also extremely thought provoking. Despatches has a good reputation for in-depth and socially useful investigation. They are not, however, immune to the need for sensation in their programmes. In the Undercover Mosque programme...seems they went a little further than that.

I am quite angry about this. In a time when racist threats and attacks on moslems and assumed-moslems are at an all time high, when emotions are rising and tensions simmering, we could really, really do without being lied to.

The police investigation was extended to include looking at issues relating to the editing of the programme.

Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) lawyer Bethan David scrutinised 56 hours of media footage, only some of which was used in the broadcast.

She said: "The splicing together of extracts from longer speeches appears to have completely distorted what the speakers were saying.

"The CPS has demonstrated it will not hesitate to prosecute those responsible for criminal incitement.

"But in this case we have been dealing with a heavily-edited television programme, apparently taking out of context aspects of speeches which in their totality could never provide a realistic prospect of any convictions."

I consider myself a reasonably sophisticated viewer...I was convinced by this

Yeah, and the bbc was also recently in trouble for making the queen out to be a dummy spitter. Shocking!

I'm glad we don't have that kind of reporting over here in the US.:eyebrow:

Haheh. I am not unused to tv massaging the data, I am just annoyed at how well they did this. How completely consciously they sought to increase ill feeling and uncertainty in this country towards those of the moslem faith. What caught me off guard....is this didn't come from the tabloid press...didn't come from the right wing broadsheets or the scaremongering Panorama, didn't come from the usual suspects. This piece of creative Islamophobia came from Channel 4. This is about as close to the 'Liberal Media' as you are going to get without actually moving into the Newsnight studio.
