Thread Ownership

If you start a thread, is it yours? Or does it belong to the community? What right do you have to complain about the content other people apply to a thread you have started? What right do you have to ignore the thread "rules" imposed by the thread starter? Just wondering....

Me, I think trying to own a thread is like expressing ownership of a gallon of untrapped air. Which molecules exactly are yours, and how to you plan to control them? But then I see so much talk about "my thead, her thread, other people's threads...." :eyebrow: Isn't it a little lame to try and control responses to what you post (although obviously this is a necessity in game-type threads)? If threads were meant to be owned, wouldn't the starter have the ability to delete and moderate? Or is this the preliminary to a new netiquette? A code of conduct above and beyond that which is dictated by physical abilities and limitations?

Does this mean I don't own the sex thread anymore? :sniff:

TheMercenary 05-29-2007 10:16 PM

No one owns a thread on an otherwise open forum. Don't be surprised what people post in response, and on that same note don't act all shocked by what responses are posted to your repsonse.

It used to be that you could ask UT for a forum of your own, for specific purposes... Syc's manifestos and LJs office for instance... You could have rules and moderate your stuff.
I don't know if that's still an option (but would guess that it is). I know LJ closed his forum becuase he just didnt have the time for it anymore.

I see everything else, except iotd, as public space. Think thread-starter not thread-owner.

Not a chance. That thread has already deteriorated into a bitch fest over a dick pic and the right to make or not make snarky comments. I don’t need to give anyone ammo on me.;) :D

Brrrrrock, brock brock :)

We have YET to see a dwellers penis....its just not fair.

Cloud 05-30-2007 01:03 AM

yes, it belongs to the poster, but complaining is petty

Starting a thread is like launching a balloon or a paper boat... once you release it you have no control where it's going, no matter how much you want to. If you try, you'll probably kill it.

You can describe the guidelines you would like it to follow, where you hope it will go, but you can't make demands, and expect to be taken seriously.
What are you gonna do about it... log off?

Thread, string, rope, chain.... you can pull it, but you can't push it.

Aliantha 05-30-2007 05:15 AM

ducky...I'm sure we can find a penis for you ifyou really want one.

Depends on the thread, how personal it is, and if the topic begs input from others.

The dodads thread was Bruce's thread that others would sometimes post in. The Happy Monkey woodworking thread was the same.
There are a bunch of others too.
