Infanticide

An 18 year old suburban Philadelphia woman has been arrested for killing her newborn baby.

"Mainstream America" perceives sex and nudity as "dirty".
"Mainstream America" frowns on pre-marital sex.
"Mainstream America" won't allow "institutional" sex education.
"Mainstream America" won't provide condoms to minors.
"Mainstream America" frowns on unmarried pregnant women.
"Mainstream America" frowns on women who have an abortion.
"Mainstream America" doesn't give a break to single moms

What does "Mainstream America" get? Kids killing their newborn babies.

.

Anyone in my business knows how untrue that is. It's a copout and I hear it all the time.

Financial Aid at a community college. Our work is often tied to the welfare and assistance programs when figuring financial eligibility.

Don't get me wrong. I see single mothers who rise from the ashes like a Phoenix and do great. I love to see that.

I just know how much they stand to "profit" financially by going to school and how little help others get. There's a big focus on the "single mother." I see their tax forms when I verify and note their $5000 refund which is a super-negative total tax liability; I see the federal and state grants and the low interest student loans, I see the WIC and the TANF and the TEAP programs.

I love to see people soar when given these opportunities. My skin crawls when the first reason for anything going wrong in their lives is that they are a single mother. I guess this liberal has gotten a bit jaded over time.

The only thing that makes this story interesting is that this was a rich, Mainline kid, not some inner city child-woman on welfare.

The problem is not "mainstream America." The problem is that life has been devalued to the point where things like this happen.

I wouldn't call an inner city child-woman on welfare "mainstream America". It seems to me that she wouldn't be subject to most of my list.

Your rich kid isn't subject to most of your list, either.

Much as I respect you Spexx, I just can't see this lady - or her baby - as a victim of mainstream America.

Why?

Because if this lady (I hesitate to say girl, seems patronising) was raised in middle class mainstream America then one of the attitudes she would have absorbed would be a sentimental approach to children and the belief that every mother should and would give their life for their child. (This is not a criticism of American culture - it is a generalised comment on Western values)

If she was able to go against that in order to leave her newborn baby in a bag and not tell anyone, surely she would have been capable of going against any perceived opinion on having the child aborted or giving it up for adoption, or raising the child herself.

My suggestion is that she was simply overwhelmed and either mentally and emotionally incapable of facing up to the situation, or struck by severe post-partum depression that clouded her judgement.

All cultures have similar stories.

They used to have them in this country, years ago. The do gooders decided that wasn't proper and demanded the government place all kinds of restrictions on orphanages and adoptions.
