Dylan, and Simon & Garfunkel
What are must-haves from their works?
I've never heard much except what's in movies and on TV, I like what I've heard, so I need a starting point. Suggestions on where to start are appreciated. |
All of them?
Start with the greatest hits, I guess, and go from there... Dylan's Blood On The Tracks and Nashville Skyline are my favorites, personally |
I'm strangely resistant to anything that can roughly be described as folk. Therefore,
Dylan was incredibly overrated S&G got better over time, making "Bridge over Troubled Water" their best; and Simon solo continued to get better after that, until the apex of "Graceland", which is amongst the top 50 of all time. |
Dylan: Live at the Gaslight and No Direction Home
S&G: Concert in the Park '82, although Paul Simon's solo of the same name ('91) is better. |
Dylan wrote better than he sings. The last thing I heard from him was that baffling, unintelligible livecast from Japan adorning some political convention or other a few years back. It was saddening.
He always did sing like a duck, but the folk poetry of his Sixties works stands up well, I think. My permanent Dylan favorite is The Times They Are A-Changin'. |
This duet with Johnny Cash is my favourite- Dylan is gorgeous and I love his voice.

I agree with the Toad. Bridge Over Troubled Water is excellent! Get The Sounds Of Silence, too. AWESOME!
Dylan must haves: Blonde on Blonde and Blood On The Tracks. |
Paul Simon: Negotiations and Love Songs...
A greatest hits album, but man that guy can write and arrange some music. |

Thanks Lj, got it after numerous attempts.

I have to agree that Blood on the Tracks is *the* must have Dylan. It was the peak of his powers as a songwriter (60's era classics are fine, too, but this is better) and the musicality was the best of his career.
S&G...just get it all. |
Thank you all so much for the suggestions.
I've got a great big stack of music to listen to now. |
