Great photos!
Some questions: The fair looked very empty. Di you go early because of your son/ chair? The rabbit photo - was this a rabbit prize? Or a racing rabbit? What on earth did you put on your chips?! Mustard? And is that a genuine honest to goodness pig race taking place? Apart from that, fairs look to be the same pretty much the world over. And I love them - thanks for sharing. |
That looks like a lot of fun:) thanks for sharing

Ahh, the fair. My friend and I in High School used to count down the days every year...what a great place to scope out all the boys in the county! The smells of sugar waffles and pig barns. The sights of lights and giant stuffed animals. The kids screaming with delight and sometimes fear. Those were some great days. One year the army guy took us in his jeep to a nearby open field to go what we called turfin'. We were in hog heaven, so to speak. :) |
Ah yes, SG, they are "cheese fries," also sometimes augmented with chili (the bean-and-meat stew kind) to make... wait for it... "chili cheese fries." We are not as creative with our food names as you folks with your jacket potatoes and your bangers 'n' mash.

The rabbit is part of the ag area. Indeed a pig race, there is a swimming event too, but I was not feeling well during that. Yup, cheese fries... the chili did not look hot or I would have had that with Tabasco as well. |
That's where the difference is, in the fairs then. Our fairs are purely run by "travelling folk" and designed to part you from your money ASAP - no livestock or races. Yours sounds like a cross between a fair and a County Show.
County Shows could definitely be improved by having rides, but I didn't think fairs could be improved much. However a with a pig race, or swimming pigs....! Wow. You can get chips n cheese here too but the cheese is real cheese, grated into a soft yellow pile on top (what is this squirty thing - gives me the dithers) In fact my local in London used to do an eye watering version of chilli chips n cheese that it took 3 of us to eat. But not at a fair. Never at a fair. I want to move to America now. At Goose Fair in Nottingham (20 odd miles from my home) you can get mushy peas in a cup. With mint sauce. Can't say it ever appealed to me. |
Fair food is the best of food, and the worst of food:
Elephant Ears Sugar Waffles Fair fries in a cup (with salt and ketchup or vinegar) Italian sausages Deep fried ice cream Cotton candy (I sound like the rat from Charlotte's web) Anyway, it all tastes great and it's guaranteed to instantly explode some arteries. |

The peas and mint does not sound great to me. I also had a Polish sausage with onions and peppers, coffee, with a funnel cake dusted with powdered sugar; throughout the night. The most I have eaten in a VERY long time... I have not eaten today and still feel full. Has my composition improved guys? Keep in mind I can only work from a chair, so my mobility and from where I can shoot is limited, but I try. Having fun with the filters and new lenses. Should I have tried my polarizing filter? What would it do with the lights, etc? I may go back on Sat. any suggestions? I have some family snapshots in the album too, if anyone cares to see them (without sharing them), PM me. |
My favourites out of your pics were 1278 with the ghostly bumper-car (or dodgems) riders and 1280 with the fisheye thingie.
|
Thank you... I have been working with the fish-eye. I can move past the tunnel effect and usually do, but sometimes I like it.

After spending some time with these, this one has become my favorite.

That is a good one. I just can't get over what a ghost town that place is.

We have "Shows"....they call them Agricultural Shows, as there are heaps of animals... horse/cow/chook judging etc Plus, side show alley, which is the traveling folk, following the circuit with all the rides and yummy food (my favorite being the Dagwood Dog!). We have pig races and pig swimming, even pig high diving!! I love shows!! |
