Screen Shots

How do you capture screen shots? Stupid question, but I've never really needed to do this before.

The print screen button puts it on the clipboard, then paste it into Paint (or whatever).

Ctrl + prnt scrn is the whole screen.
Alt + prnt scrn is the Window that is "activated"
Go to your favorite visual program and hit Ctrl + V and it will paste into the Window you have opened.
Often you will have had to open a new one, many will automatically open a Window to the appropriate size. If not, just do one at 20x20 and then crop it to the area you want later.

Wow. There's a button. Thanks.

I ususally just leave a dish of beer near the keyboard and see what turns up in the morning

JayMcGee 12-27-2006 08:53 PM

salt.

can't beat it.

find your jpeg, *slowley* approach from behind...... when you get to striking distance, throw salt on its tail.

never fails.

Whats the deal with this: I try to capture a screen shot like normal using that method while watching a movie, and it starts acting all funny. Basically not letting me manipulate the image contained within the window (in this case windows media player, but have also tried VLC) that was copied. I don't really know how to describe it but its becoming quite frustrating.

Sundae 12-28-2006 04:56 AM

Mine doesn't seem to work.
Which didn't bother me before I knew about it - but does now.

Whether I hit just the Print Screen button, or the Alt or Control buttons, nothing goes onto the clipboard and nothing is available to paste.

Any ideas?

shift + printscreen

Sundae 12-28-2006 09:47 AM

Nope :(

lumberjim 12-28-2006 10:05 AM

it's a PC, right?...not a MAC...

Sundae 12-28-2006 10:16 AM

It's a PC alright.
Any chance it's something to do with it being part of a network (no,I don't know what I'm talking about, just making suggestions)

lumberjim 12-28-2006 10:24 AM

are the keyboard and monitor connected to the same PC? then it shouldn;t matter. maybe your keyboard is AFU.

Sundae 12-28-2006 10:36 AM

I'm covering Reception now, on a different PC. Still no go. Maybe it's some weird IT conspiracy... When I get back to my desk I'll fake a reason to need a screenprint and call them.

Or I will tomorrow anyway (they'll have left by the time I finish on here)

By Cotrl-PrtScrn, then means holding down Ctrl key when pressing the PrtScrn key.

Also only some programs can acknowledge that clipboard copy. Programs that cannot understand graphics (ie Notepad), will show nothing to paste.
