University of Leeds

Ha. I had to take my camera into Uni today to grab some shots of the York Gospels for a research project; so, I took a few snaps of the campus whilst I was about it. This is where I spend an inordinate amount of my time :P

Picture 1 is Parkinson Hall, which sits at the main entrance to the Uni (entrance to the left of the big white building); picture 2 is the Baines memorial wing. These are the two buildings where I spend most of my time.

These two are different angles on the Baines Memorial wing, and next to it the old Cloth Workers' Hall.

Different part of the campus. I love these newer buildings, but not a much as the old red brick :P

This is the Roger Stephens building. I don't go in there much, but I love the architecture. Looks better on a sunny day of course, with light glinting off the water, but not too many of those in Leeds this time of year:P

One of the things I love about the campus, is that they have basically cordoned off a section of city. There are lots of purpose built modern(ish) buildings and lots of old red brick buildings from what used to be the Yorkshire College (before it became a uni in 1904) but there are also whole streets of town houses, the odd church or chapel, all within the campus, all used by the uni or students. Some of the faculty offices and even some teaching rooms, are in old town houses.

There are several libraries on campus, but this one is my favourite. I'm not much good at photography, so I don't think this picture really does it justice, but I love this library. I mainly work in here when I can. The picture just shows the main central hub, it doesn't show the warrens that run along and underneath.

Cool. The grass is incredibly green.
Any pictures of the refectory? :D

*grins* alas not. It's closed now til after Christmas. Which of course meant I was not able to get a cooked breakfast today.

Looks like typical English December weather!

DanaC 12-18-2006 11:50 AM

It's been reasonably mild thus far for December. But today was fucking freezing! At least, it felt freezing. No sign of ice or snow yet. Not even frost.

Great pictures Dana. Thanks for posting them.

Everything looks better in the summer, but it seems a remarkably attractive campus even on a grey December day.

I like the idea they cordoned off the campus - our two Universities are spread all around the city. Better to keep the students in one place and not go there ;)

I LOVE the library. Does it smell good though?

DanaC 12-19-2006 02:09 PM

Well, there are other campuses as well, Leeds university represents a substantial amount of Leeds in terms of groundspace. But this is the main campus, the rest are additions over the last century, like colleges they've incorporated into the uni.

The library smells great!

Also so do some of the books. I was sat doing some study down in the vaults where some of the subject lists are housed, and one of the books I was working from was published in 1889.

Isn't this University where The Who recorded Live at Leeds?

DanaC 12-20-2006 04:52 PM

Yup.
