Never heard of Christmas lollies? OMG!!! What planet have you been living on Dana??? lol

when I was little - actually right up till she passed away - my Mum used to make what we called Christmas Lollies. Mostly consisting of the things I mentioned in my first post, but also chocolate treats and other christmas trimmings for the table and to offer the inveritable unexpected guests who always call in at this time of year.

Planet Brit! That sounds like a fabulous tradition.

It's fabulous in every way except that now I'm the one who makes the lollies, and my waistline suffers. ;)

Are rum balls anything like rum-babas? Or is it something that afflicts Ozzie men....

Aliantha 12-04-2006 08:00 PM

rum balls are dried fruit and biscuit crumbs and condensed milk (and rum) and coconut all mixed up together, then rolled into little balls, then rolled in more coconut.

Very delicious...specially with lots of rum. ;)

eeeegh! condensed milk! The rest I can live with, but ..... condensed milk...

urgh... just urgh

Well it's very yummy in this recipie Jay. If you like sweets, and you like chocolate and you like rum, you're almost guaranteed to like this one. Oh, I forgot to say it's got cocoa in it also.

JayMcGee 12-04-2006 08:41 PM

wow...... that sounds incredibly rich.

and, oh yes, I do like rum...... (raises glass of rum'n'coke to toast ali) ... how else d'ya think I can cope with this board?

We only made Christmas cookies -- except for that one year Mom made those incredible fruitcakes. I never understood why fruitcake was dissed so much until I had a taste of commercial fruitcake.

In any case, we never made fudge, and I don't even know what White Christmas is. What is it?

Aliantha 12-04-2006 08:43 PM

Rumballs are very rich Jay. Almost an aphrodesiac in my books. ;)

Aliantha 12-04-2006 08:45 PM

White Christmas is mostly rice bubbles, with mixed dried fruit, glace cherries, icing sugar and coconut, all melded together with copha (I think you have a different name for that in the US).

I put it in patty pans (little cupcake papers) and the kids really love it.
