musicians and friendships

When riding that wave of accomplishment and lust of great fame and fortune why do some musicians feel their common friends, the ones who were with them from the beginning are some how expendable in the their 'great design'. ??

I am saddened to see a friend appear to become a social climber. The logic I get is that it has to be that way in order to become famous, or great. As if feeling brotherly love for someone is a little distracting and gets in the way. I don't like the way this person is becomming.

I am sure all musicians arn't so jaded and think it's all about them?

Or maybe what they are doing is just alot of hard work. Maybe they are very busy and don't have as much time to spend on their personal life as before. Maybe it isn't the way they would prefer it to be, and you taking it the wrong way just adds insult to injury. Just a thought, there is always two sides.

Musicians have friends. Potential stars have only support groups, entourages.....resources.

Yes it is alot of hard work. No, he prefers it that way and wants to work harder and I encourage him in his passion. He wants to become a star. well, of course and I would never begrudge him that. I have encouraged him every step of the way. I just don't want him to lose his inner self while he is morphing into this star. AND I really don't want to hurt him. He is a lovely soul and that is what I want to keep intact.

thanks Flint for the help :) It made me feel better.

 You are so right. I'm talking about a young rising star with all of the last three in tow. You so you hit the nail on the head with that one AND made me smile at the same time.

[edit. even though it smarted like hell]

I'm afraid you're too late.

I am afraid I am ahead by a century.

Consider the "fair weather friends" concept here. Those who are tagging along while all is well in his world will most likely be gone at the first sight of difficulty, trouble or another star that is apparently rising a little faster or farther. Maybe at that time he'll realize who his true friends really are. I was never famous, but when things in my life got tough I certainly found out who my "True friends" were/are. Give him some time and hope that he too learns before he loses the true friend I think he has in you.

oh suuure :p

I could never get gripped out about him. He was my poetry partner on AG. He has come to visit me twice. We are the best of friends I am just not up to his speed and probably distracting baggage now with nothing to offer. Just matronly advice.

[inner rant]
.....and my male relationships they end up dispising the emotional connection they have for me. Seems like that is the story of my life. Love me so much they hate me for it. I become an unwanted distraction or obligation. seems. On the fringe but never really completly loved without fear or hostility. Well only by my mom I guess. She loves me :p heh
( just thinking and wallowing)

update

we're ok ....but my question to musicians still stands.

Do/did you think it's all about you?

When did you stop playing music for the way it makes you feel and start playing it because it's going to make you famous one day?

How did you stay centered?

When did you realize you needed a 'real 'paying job? and did you get a real paying job ( lucrative) before or after a certain amount of success?

"We only like musicians as friends"

Who do you define as "musician"? Only those that are paid for it?
"Music is far too important to be left to the professionals" (sorry, can't attribute the quote).

My observation is that a true musician will make music with and for anybody, while an amateur who thinks too highly of him/herself will say "I'm too good to waste my talents here" in some situations (given adequate free time and energy levels, that is ...) [ducks flames]
