Philly's are Tough!

As Nelson would say Ha-Ha!

PHILADELPHIA (July 18) - A customer at a city grocery tackled an armed robber and beat him with a can of applesauce when he refused to drop his gun, police said.
The suspect shot himself in the head during the struggle, and passed out after the 66-year-old customer administered four blows to the head with the Mott's applesauce.
"Finally, the guy passes out," said Det. Curtis Matthews. "There's blood everywhere - on the floor, all over."
About 15 customers were in Gomez Grocery in the city's East Germantown section when the gunman walked in Sunday afternoon, jumped atop a small freezer and pointed the gun at store owner Eddie Gomez, police said.

Customer Thomas Santana, who is 5-foot-4, grabbed the 6-foot-1 gunman from behind when he was on the freezer, and with help from Gomez knocked him down.
The suspect, 23-year-old Thomas Reyes, was in stable condition at a hospital, and was expected to be charged with attempted murder, attempted robbery and other charges, authorities said.

So...the perp shot himself in the head, but it was getting hit by a 66-yo with *applesauce* that knocked him out?

Too bad the old-timer wasn't packing...maybe he could have saved the city the costs of healing the guy and locking him up until a liberal judge could put him on probation.

Stupid perp - he was probably wearing a Giants hat.

A$$whoopin by Applesauce. By a 5'4" 66 year old no less.

That's going to go over reeeeeal good in the Big House.

Since Philadelphia PD controls permit issuance in the city, it's effective may issue rather than shall issue there. You can only get one if you're related to the mayor, and since most of his relatives have either extensive criminal histories or pending indictments, that should explain a lot.

Can of applesauce: $1.67
Concealable handgun: $200

Watching a thief with a hole in his head getting beat with canned fruit: Priceless

actual price of used concealable handgun < $200 < Not risking your life getting up-close and personal with a violent felon

Shawnee123 07-20-2006 02:42 PM

Sorry, had no idea what a gun might cost.

You could find a handgun for $200. So you are correct. You could also find one for more, and find one for less. The point of your post was not dependent on the cost of a handgun. Some people just like to poke others with sticks for no reason.

You guys get applesauce in cans? I only remember it in glass jars...

The point of my post was that even $200 - $1.67 is worth not going hand-to-hand with a violent felon who's substantially bigger and younger than you.

That said, I suspect they didn't make him pay for the applesauce. After all, it was shopworn.

I recall that one of the FBI tapes of Street's cronies recorded (now ex-) City Treasurer Cory Kemp bragging about doing a straw handgun purchase for his girlfriend.

That said, based on the experience of members of the Delaware Valley Pink Pistols chapter, it *is* possible to get a handgun licence in Philly...but you may have to stand up to a lot of attempted intimidation and blantantly illegal maneuvers by Philly cops trying to discourage you. One of our people had to get his State Representative into the act to get a *renewal* of an already-issued licence.

It's much easier to just move to one of the surrounding counties where the UFA is more respected.

I poked a homeless guy with a stick one time. I think he was dead.

The store brand is often available in cans.

[!]We don't want to mention anything about the risk of shooting a family member; that's a fabrication of the liberal media.[/!]

Although you appear to express it as hyperbole, that is a correct statement.
