Call for New Forum

Ok, I know this is predominatlely an American site, but both Current Affairs and Politics are dominated by/skewed to the Ameriican viewpoint.

How about an International Afffairs (don't you just love French lovers) or Politics thread?

xoxoxoBruce 07-16-2006 07:04 PM

Why should it be a separate forum rather than threads in Politics or Current Events forums, like the British Politics thread.

Not to be chauvinistic (which I am), but is there anything going on over there that Americans should not be concerned with?
Do you think there would be enough traffic to warrant a new forum?

Anybody have thoughts on this?

From a quick look, about half the posts in Current Events would belong in an International Affairs section.

I have no opinion on whether this "ought to be" an American forum, I guess it's roughly an English language forum. All are welcome, but it does seem that people who speak English as a foreign language are always at a serious disadvantage.

BigV 07-16-2006 09:25 PM

May I participate in this proposed forum? Must I type with a French accent if I do? What would be the point?

Rock Steady 07-16-2006 10:26 PM

I don't even use the forums taxonomy. I just look at "User CP" subscribed threads or "New Posts". I don't see the point of anything more than one forum for this site.

I don't think that an International News/Politics Forum is needed, as the existing Current Events and Politics sections are not specific to the United States.

Post a couple of interesting things about foreign news and politics and see what happens. Assuming there are any interesting things, of course.

I don't believe we need this forum, because I don't believe in the existence of other countries. I've never seen them, and if I don't have empirical evidence, I'm not just going to take it on faith.

Until we have proof, I say no need to cater to the "Internatio-nistas" and their so called "Global Perspective" agenda.

cableguy 07-17-2006 02:50 AM

so, I guess you've never picked up a paper or talked to anybody but your immediate family your whole life?

I think Wolf was talking to Jay McGee, and I think Much-binding-in-the-Marsh is in England ...

Wolf can correct me if I'm wrong; but, I took her above quoted statement to mean that if there is presently an international topic that someone would like to generate a discussion on in the Cellar, they should not hesitate to do so in the existing subject related forums. I really didn't get the impression that wolf was belittling international topics.

Our media regularly breaks news topics down for consumers into international, national, and local news and that works well for the initial presentation of information. When specific information is singled out for elaboration and/or discussion, it is not so important to categorize it that way. I wouldn't expect placement of a thread into a forum titled "International" to draw more hits to it for that reason; unless, multiple languages were involved.

OTOH, International Nothingland has kind of a nice ring to it reminiscent of IHOP. :D

I'd like to see a forum for people who have sex with animals. We animal lovers - not big animals, just tight little varmints mostly - have a different perspective on international affairs, .... I'm sorry, I can't keep a straight face.

Wouldn't international affairs include the US? Or would this forum be "International Affairs in which the US is not involved"?

So let's sum up: Biranna is against stuffing animals and Spexxvet is for it. But not with a stright face, so it would be AOTSS.
