7/6/2006: Guy's skull falls off

Hat's off to electrician Sambhu Roy, who is holding part of his head.

And you thought you had a bad day. According to this BBC story, Roy was repairing high-voltage wires when he suffered a massive shock and electrical burn. His scalp was so heavily burnt that it had no blood supply, and so it slowly decayed and fell off.

Well it sure looks like his skull bone, but maybe not. An Indian doctor says it is, thinking that maybe "the skull's inner covering and the membrane which helps produce bone were 'miraculously unaffected', allowing fresh bone to grow." The alternate theory is that the "hard outer portion of the scalp came off" and "If the skull itself came off with the brain of the patient being exposed, the patient wouldn't have survived." Whichever explanation is right, the guy has to consider himself extremely lucky and he is busy basking in the excitement.

It looks like a manky piece of towel on his head to me. Still, I guess you can't be too fussy when you're a medical miracle & all that.

Hats off to that guy for trying to get ahead in the world.

Maybe I'm just naturally skeptical, but that rag on his head appears to be digitally superimposed. This guy may be the Indian version of finger-in-my-chili.

Nah, don't think so. You can see a dip in the gauze where the hole in his head is and around the gauze you can see the stripy edge of where I think the rest was attached. Amazing he survived.

Dude needs the Skull Club for Men...

Can you imagine how it must have smelled while the top of his head rotted off?

rkzenrage 07-06-2006 01:20 PM

Mmmmm.... rotten noggin'.

Wouldn't you have done something before it rotted off? Wonder how it was in the shower? Hunks of rotting off skin in your hands while you try to lather. EW!

I would find this easier to believe if his last name were Simpson.

the luckiest unlucky dude I've ever seen.

The part of his head without hair looks smaller than that thing in his hand.
What in hell is the "hard outer portion of the scalp"?
Is it a giant scab?

dar512 07-06-2006 07:44 PM

It'd make a heck of a conversation piece, though. Wouldn't it? "Yeah, my head fell off a couple of years ago. Don't you hate it when that happens?"
