Question for our Aussie readers
What in the name of Bob is a "Yabbie"?
I think it is some kind of amphibian but require a more concrete definition so as to better understand an Australian anecdote. Thank you |
It appears to be either a small freshwater lobster or large crawfish.

What Wolf said!
Basically a little lobster. We used to catch them as kids. Range in size from less than an inch up to about 6 inches. Lethal nippers - they seem to have a knack for getting you on the little web of skin between your fingers... http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b322/perrys/yabby.jpg Supposedly good eating, but I've never been particulartly impressed with them. |
Yabbie's are nasty lil critters!! but they can make great pets.
They are tasty if they arent from a really muddy dam. |
is there an australian alive that hasnt gone yabbie fishing?
you gotta pick em up behind the pincers to not get snipped http://www.rpdc.tas.gov.au/soer/imag...d_yabby2-m.jpg |
So prettymuch it's an overglorified, slightly scarier crawdad?
|
Yabbie-ing...not yabbie fishing, ya bloody toorak farmer.
|
Oh my.
Is that what is sold as "bugs" at a restaurant? |
Nup.
Moreton bay bug (slipper lobster) http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b322/perrys/bugs2.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b322/perrys/bugs1.jpg Mmmmm...Moreton bay bug, sweeetest of the sweet crustaceionies... cooked properly, the flesh just peels gently away from the shell, with the slightest squeeze of lemon and some seafoof sauce on the side...mmmmmm 'scuse me, I'd like to be alone with the seafood now. |

Someone beat me to it but we have a dam in our front yard / Paddock and we go yabbying all the time 0 just to see how many we catch i couldnt bear to throw them in a boiling pot of salty water poor things. (its a wives tale round here that you'll only catch Yabbies in months that have a "Y" in them. so far it been pretty true)
these babies were caught a couple of days ago in our dam... the picture posted before of the large, dark blue yabbie looks like its from a coastal lake or breeding dam.. the wild ones here are red from the muddy conditions and much less "spikey". |
