Who Invented the Walkman?

Sony? Nope. According to this article, Andreas Pavel, a German living in São Paulo, invented it in February 1972.

Even though he patented it in Italy, United States, Germany, England and Japan, it took until 2003 for Sony to settle up. This is partially because he wanted credit, in addition to money, and Sony didn't want to do that.

The first piece of music Pavel used to test his new invention? "Push Push," a collaboration between the jazz flutist Herbie Mann and the blues-rock guitarist Duane Allman.:D

Walk This Way, Man

I'm not surprised. Paulistas are very comopolitan and well-educated. Herbie Mann was really into Brasilian music and travelled to Rio and Sao Paulo extensively, so perhaps he liked him.

Gosh, I miss Brasil.

Hey, what are we doing posting when we should be working?

Get back to work!

'72? Maybe. I'm all about the true original, the Regency TR-1! 1954 portable audio. Later revisions had a headphone (mono!) jack.

The round, scroll wheel-like dial looks so familiar, somehow. Hmm...

Here's the baby I want. It was featured in Russ Myers' Mondo Topless, one of my favorite movies.

That's hot! I'll keep an eye out down here at Greenshift, a comic book shop that, among other things, has a large collection of old radios and guitar amps up for sale. Lots of tubes, plenty of old transistor units.

Thanks man.

I gotta stop jonesin on cool radios or I'll run out of room. The consoles are huge.
