September 25, 2007: Computer thief apparently uploads pic of himself

http://cellar.org/2007/macthief.jpg

Making the rounds, via Boing Boing. Do you know this man? Let the victim tell the tale:
Quote:

Last week a number of computers were stolen from our office in Vancouver, BC. One of those computers was a shared iMac with Flickrbooth, an app that automatically uploads photo booth shots to our flickr account, installed on it. Just this morning a friend called to tell us that there are photos of whoever has the computer now in our flickr stream! Obviously the guy didn't know he was uploading images of himself and his awesome tattoos.
As the Flickr page says,
Quote:

Yes, our computer was stolen and this photo was taken since...Wow this guy is dumb.

If anyone knows this guy or recognizes the tattoo artist please e-mail us at info[a]abetterplacetowork.com
...
The funniest part is that he had to name the picture and then click a button that says "upload" in order for it to show up here. It's not totally automatic.

Eh?? He knows he's doing something but he doesn't know fully what it is?

Somethin' ain't quite right about this guy...

Spexxvet 09-25-2007 02:20 PM

He looks like a former boss of mine, but last I heard, he was in Cincinnati.

Apparently, someone has already thought to provide something like this, as an anti-theft measure:

Quote:

Transmission of network information

Undercover transmits network information of the stolen Mac. This information includes both internal and external IP addresses and the router address, enabling our recovery center to accurately trace the Mac's physical location, in collaboration with the ISP and the police.

See what happens on your stolen Mac

Undercover is the world's first theft-recovery software that will send screenshots of your stolen Mac at regular intervals. These screenshots will sooner or later reveal the thief's identity (e.g. when chatting, reading and writing emails,...) making it much easier to work with law enforcement in order to recover your Mac.

See who's using your Mac
Undercover introduces another world first: if your Mac has a built-in or external iSight, Undercover will transmit pictures of the thief and his surroundings every 6 minutes, making it even easier to identify the current user. It's like having a private detective working for you.

What did you do? They look like the same guy, but different weight and tatoos. Twins?

BigV 09-25-2007 02:39 PM

It's all done with mirrors these days.

I think he split the first picture and made two from the mirror images.

aaaah, I see.

theotherguy 09-25-2007 02:42 PM

In Flint's shots, it looks like the guy is playing with the special effects that come with iSight (the mac camera).

//sigh// I really try to have faith in my fellow human beings... truly... but outside the cellar and a few other choice locations, I'm finding more and more people whose common sense is gravely lacking. But I'm in a funk today, so maybe it's just me. :eyebrow:

No sadly its not just you

BigV 09-25-2007 05:27 PM

Don't be so blue (they come in pink y'know. sapphires, that is).

It's a *good* thing that the bad guys are dum. It's just gravy that we get to laugh at this one. Ok, sry the computer has been stolen. But the rest is pretty funny. If you want funk, I strongly suggest you get down here instead.
