Feb 12, 2009: Hotfoot's Bird

BusterB pointed out this colorful stainless steel bird.
It was created by a guy who calls himself Hotfoot on the Weld Talk forums, at the Hobart Welding Products website.

First he build the bird from a piece of exhaust tubing, a ball joint and a whole lot of stainless flatwear. Pretty clever. ;)

Then the bird is brushed with Linseed Oil and Japan dryer.
Heating the bird with a propane brush burner causes the oil to change color from yellow to gold to copper to brown to black.
You can stop at any color and it will dry to a weather resistant finish.

The red on the bird is a reflection from the guy's truck.
I wonder if this bird will show up on the Antiques Roadshow, in 50 years, as folkart?

Pretty! Hobart welding is up here in Troy, ohio; right?

ZenGum 02-12-2009 04:17 AM

Way cool.

I've long had an idea to make a fish sculpture using spoons as scales, and other cutlery for its features. This guy could knock one up, no worries.

Yeah! It's my hometown. I think i've mentioned before about my grandpa's lifesize welded man and dog in his backyard. He worked for Hobart.

It's a small world.

Outstanding talent. And original. I bet it would be even better on a much larger scale.

You are confused. There is no spoon.

It's a one of a kind, but yes he sold it. Apparently Hotfoot makes junk sculptures continuously, for charity auctions (full sized motorcycle with robot rider for Wounded Warrior), and gift shops in his area (southwest).
