Celebrity Death Pool 2014

And no, after my Secret Santa experience I have no intention of acting as administrator. Just thought that as it's half-past January, someone should kick it off...

Stephen Hawking
Ian Brady
Terry Pratchett
Terence Stamp
Prince Philip
Rev Ian Paisley
Tony Benn
Casey Kasem
Ian McKellan
Wilko Johnson

There. Done.
More Brit-centric than ever before, but these are the people I read about and know. Well, not personally, otherwise I'd put my parents' cat on there.
Except she's already excluded for being a cat.
And not being a public figure.

You do realise that Mr Limey gets the points, not you, right?
Which may lead to a situation as in QI, where the audience wins. Still, who am I to bring up rules and regulations with a Mod!?

Oh and tell him next year to include at least one wild card; the younger the person the more points you get.

NB. You have heard of the Queen though?

DanaC 01-18-2014 02:13 PM

Yeah. Careful. Limes is a prefect now!

Sundae 01-18-2014 02:17 PM

My Mum was a Prefect, and then Head Girl.
My Dad was a mod.

Monster!
Griff is making fun of a much treasured Cellar thread!

He's not breaking any official rules, but he needs a telling off.
Just telling him he won't win with that selection probably won't be enough.

Griff 01-18-2014 05:33 PM

Oh, I will win and with style.

infinite monkey 01-20-2014 12:24 PM

Who won last year? I said i left my spreadsheet at the old job. If'n somebody plans to score it, I'll play. otherwise it's just a thread up there with word ass and word disass. Which is to say: annoying.

monster 01-20-2014 12:26 PM

I'll score it

assuming you've only selected people still alive, is it a combination or a permutation?
put another way, do they have to kark it (UK) or buy the farm (USA) in the order you specify?

footfootfoot 01-20-2014 02:38 PM

It's hard enough getting these fuckers to allow my nominees. Let's not make it impossible.

Anyone on your list dies, you get points. Points are 110 minus [age at death.] So one young death gets you more points than several geezers in their 90s. Most points at the end of the year wins.

Molasar 01-20-2014 04:20 PM

thanks clodfobble a really concise and comprehensive explanation.

funny thing is that in UK we just had the Clint Eastwood/Liam Neeson movie "Dead Pool" a week or two back.
might have to have a crack at this myself

Clodfobble 01-20-2014 04:32 PM

To the best of my recollection, I have never accurately predicted a single celebrity death in this thread. So if you're making your list, I would stay away from everyone I picked.

I would suggest that Ashley Purdy is not on your to be seen naked list... he may not be on anyone's naked list actually.

monster 01-20-2014 08:58 PM

Molasar, I think rules are spelled out in as much entirety as they get in last year's thread, but most of the ones beyond points and how famous the corpses have to be relate to ways of preventing 36" from cheating

monster 01-20-2014 08:59 PM

.....but I'd be willing to entertain the notion of a bonus for people who get 3 or more hits occurring in the order listed.... ;)

Molasar 01-21-2014 01:29 AM

... or indeed "buy 3 get 1 free" ?

GRJ was a completely random out of the air pick ( subliminal suggestion maybe) of a humerous man I would rather see more work from and hope he lives on for many years, Ricky Gervais on the other hand...

Joost van der Westhulzen

I didn't recognize this name, so I googled it and came up with this article from last November:

Quote:

He is sitting in an upstairs room at the University of Edinburgh’s Peffermill Playing Fields, 42 years old and in a wheelchair, 89 caps, 38 tries and one World Cup and none of it matters any more to Joost van der Westhuizen as he talks about the importance of family and what really matters in life. There are two things that we as humans take for granted. One is health and the other is time and the great Springbok scrum-half is not blessed with either

Diagnosed with motor neurone disease in May 2011, Van der Westhuizen was given a 20 per cent chance of surviving five years while at the same time being told he might not make it to Christmas. But here he is in Scotland, strapped into his wheelchair for fear of falling forwards, speaking with great difficulty, unable to use his arms and admitting that what he has is a death sentence, but smiling all the while and saying that he’s going to fight it. He’ll fight it with everything he’s got
and you wonder why people accuse you of cheating? I don't know that this is against the rules...per se... but it seems a bit of a foregone conclusion.

orthodoc 01-21-2014 01:20 PM

Hm. I don't think anyone on my list last year checked out, so maybe it's protective to be on certain lists ... like mine and Clod's.

Prince Phillip
Lindsay Lohan
Stephen Hawking
Olivia de Havilland
Valerie Harper
PD James
George Bush Sr.
Ed Asner
B B King
Sid Caesar

Griff 01-21-2014 06:20 PM

My list as well. I don't think I ever had a death.

In 2009, Harper was diagnosed with lung cancer.[33] She announced on March 6, 2013 that tests from a January hospital stay revealed she has leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, a rare condition in which cancer cells spread into the meninges, the membranes surrounding the brain. She said her doctors had given her as little as three months' life expectancy.[34] Although the disease is incurable, her doctors said they were treating her with chemotherapy in an effort to slow its progress.[35]

We don't actually have a rule for that do we? F3 did his research... probably a full list of terminals. It's not like adding names after the fact...

lumberjim 01-21-2014 06:49 PM

Only thing I saw a as radar saying, "no one on death row"

I guess I'm just bitter because I did zero research. Carry on.

monster 01-21-2014 10:08 PM

OK, I started work on scoring 2013 in order of appearance in thread (list sorted by score)

Dwellar Hits Score
monster 3 67
Sundae 3 67
Nirvana 1 42
Trilby, Clodfobble, Griff 0

next to be scored if anyone wants to take over: gvidas.

points for players so far:
Mandela 16
Thatcher 24
Biggs 27
Franklin 42

quote from Trilby when asked to pick a 10th player

"and...oh, shoot...let's say that ugly disgusting green-tinged boy Kate Moss goes out with. What's his name? Pete Doherty. "

monster 01-21-2014 10:12 PM

I think that was my first year with any hits at all! usually I have to take them off my list, then they die. Like MJ. Barsteward.

monster 01-22-2014 07:15 AM

man shoulda done my research and bunged Ian Brady in there....

footfootfoot 01-22-2014 09:13 AM

Jim you're a cock. You've got Ali and Castro on you list! Bitter bastidge.

Hey farto.

lumberjim 01-22-2014 10:48 AM

Are they terminal? Ali has been the same zombie for 20 years it seems. Both low scorers too. You were much more strategic.

Have a blessed day

footfootfoot 01-22-2014 11:03 AM

Absolutely strategic! Winning isn't everything but it can buy happiness

There's winning and then there's winning.

infinite monkey 01-22-2014 11:13 AM

Give foot a break. At least he didn't say The Professor and Ruben Kincaid.

Here's my list from last year...got to go check if anyone was a hit:

1) Tara Reid
2) Phil Donahue
3) Ann B Davis
4) Rush Limbaugh
5) Ed Ames
6) Andy Dick
7) Dick Cheney
8) Olivia de Havilland
9) Teri Garr
10) Muhammad Ali

eta: nope, all still kicking. So it's my 2014 list.

p.s. thanks for scoring last year, monster!

monster 01-22-2014 11:21 AM

I didn't get very far :/ maybe we should all be self scoring

I'm procrastinating right now. I have two really urgent things to do and apparently I have pissed away 5 hours already :(

infinite monkey 01-22-2014 11:23 AM

I said 'give foot a break' I didn't say let him run hog wild scoring himself.
