February 21, 2014: Abandoned Olympic venues from Sarajevo 1984
At least 8 other sites that collect viral stuff have featured this, but if you haven't seen it, it's new to you. Idea from Sycamore.
Eight years after their Olympics, Sarajevo went through a war that lasted almost four years. Most of the hotels and sports facilities were destroyed. Mt Trebevic, used for a number of Olympic events, became an artillery strongpoint. The two hills used for ski-jumping saw heavy combat and the Zetra ice rink was burnt to the ground, so it would have been wrong to expect them to keep the site up. But here is entropy in action. http://cellar.org/2014/sara-bobsled1.jpg Bobsled run in ruins. The bobsled area was used as a Bosnian-Serb artillery stronghold. http://cellar.org/2014/sara-skijump.jpg Abandoned ski jump. The mountain was used as an artillery position. Notice the big walls erected at the bottom of the jumps, so nobody can use them. http://cellar.org/2014/sara-medalpodium.jpg Medal podium at the ski jump. http://cellar.org/2014/sara-graveyard.jpg An area of the sports complex was turned into a quick graveyard. What a waste. Training facilities around the world are not all that common. It's not like every ski resort has ski jumps you can use. It would have been nice if they could have maintained bits here and there. It could have helped the local economy and also given athletes in that area a place to train.

Sarajevo was bombed and shot up to pieces. And that's only the capital city. You're going to look at hospitals, housing, schools first. By the time you turn your attention to sports facilities (some of which were already shot to sh*t) they'll probably be past the cost of saving. Photo from Wikipedia so I guess it's okay to reproduce. |
